Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

SOLD to Germany!! This is a gorgeous low mileage 1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche Drop Head Coupe (convertible) that is a largely original example having been dealer maintained. Living its life in California and Arizona from new, it is free of even the hint of corrosion.

The elegant Walnut (Code 9510261) livery has a deep luster and is in remarkable condition. Upon very close inspection, there are a few small cracks in the paint that are shown in the photo gallery detail. The chrome and stainless are absolutely gorgeous!

The leather is all the original Beige hides (VM3234) with Dark Brown (VM-890) contrasting piping. The leather has never been dyed and is in remarkable condition for a convertible that is now 41 years old. The wood is all original and is nearly flawless. It is without cracking and milkiness. This is reflective of the care the motorcar has received through its life.

The Beige top is perfectly as new and is believed to be original to the car. We have been told that it has rarely been lowered, resulting in the absence of wrinkles anywhere on the exterior or interior headliner. The original carpet is in excellent condition as well. It is believed that even the sheepskin overlay rugs are the original and are reflected in the original sales invoice.

This beautiful Corniche was sold new on March 27th, 1978 by the Roy Carver, Inc. dealership in Newport Beach to Bob Bronson, the founder of the famous Los Angeles clothing designer and manufacturer Bronson of California. We have the original sales invoice totaling $97,815, excluding taxes. The next recorded owner was Derek Mortimer-Lamb, MD, who bought the Corniche in Palm Springs, CA on May 30th, 1998. The doctor is a notable Rolls Royce Owners Club judge. The motorcar had accumulated a mere 33,500 miles. The present owner has owned the car in Scottsdale, AZ for the past 17 years and the total mileage is now 43,000 miles.

We have detailed records for most of the cars history, starting from 1978. For most all of the past 17 years the Corniche has been serviced at the local Rolls Royce dealership. We have extensive service and repair documentation.

Mechanically, the motorcar is in excellent condition. The air conditioning is still R-12 and will likely need to be converted to R-134. Further, the Michelin radials have plenty of tread left and show no cracking, but due to age should eventually be replaced.

It is rare to find such a wonderful original Corniche. But to have such low miles, well documented, dealer serviced and from California and Arizona since new, gives this example excellent provenance. It is available for inspection at our Phoenix, AZ showroom. For more information, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or harry@classicpromenade.com.

Interesting Fact: The Rolls-Royce Corniche was produced as a hardtop from 1971 to 1980 and as a convertible until 1995. This mode is a two-door, front-engine, luxury vehicle that was a development of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Additionally, Bentley created a version of the Corniche that is the Bentley Continental.   This vehicle originally got its name from the 1939 Corniche prototype and the name itself came from the French word “corniche” which means “coastal road”. The standard Rolls-Royce V8 engine is used along with a three-speed automatic transmission. In 1977, however, the Corniche received a Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection that boosted the top speed of the vehicle to 118 miles per hour.   Production of the Rolls-Royce Corniche numbers over 4,000 and the various models were popular with a number of celebrities at the time. The Rolls-Royce Corniche is loved by many and regarded as a comfortable drive by car lovers everywhere!
