Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a spectacular low mileage original (46k miles) Rolls Royce Camargue in completely original, concours condition.  This Camargue has been in one of Southern California’s most important Rolls Royce collections for many years; that of Mr. John Ellison of La Jolla.  It is being offered by us only due to his acquisition of the unique custom built 1987 Camargue drophead coupe at the Gooding & Company auction.

As VIN X10399, this Camargue appears to be one of the very last custom-built Camargues, only to be followed by twelve Camargues offered in 1987, all in white with red interior.  This Camague is elegant and understated in Magnolia livery, tan Everflex top and replete in tan Nuella hides with lighter contrasting piping.  The paint and interior are completely original and in spectacular condition.  The leather is very soft and supple with no signs of wear.   Of course it has the luxurious mouton overlays.

Camargues are fabulous driving motorcars, with the same wheelbase as a Silver Wraith yet with the structural integrity only offered by a sporting coupe.  The Pininfarina design is gorgeous and is gaining more popularity every year.  As the absolute most expensive motorcar available in 1986 ($165,000 retail price), these are the pinnacle of technology and design for the era.

This motorcar is equipped with electronic fuel injection and has been maintained very well throughout its life.  It comes complete with a full set of service records, factory build sheets and records, manuals, tools, etc.

Interesting Fact: The Rolls-Royce Camargue is a rare two-door saloon style vehicle that was produced from 1975 to 1986. Even though it was in production for over 10 years, there were only 531 units produced.    Overall reception to this luxury vehicle was negative due to a higher price and a design that was out of fashion for the time it was released. Despite this, the model actually features advanced technology for its day, such as a split-level climate control system that reportedly took the better part of a decade to develop. A standard 6.75-liter Rolls-Royce V8 engine was dropped into the vehicle as well, which means it has decent power.   The Camargue’s shares its platform with the Rolls-Royce Corniche and Silver Shadow. This model was actually the first of Rolls-Royce to have an inclined grille, rather than a vertical grille. As mentioned, sales were minimal for this vehicle, but it has gained popularity in the modern day as a classic car and as a remnant of the older model Rolls-Royce vehicles!
