Harry's Thoughts

It's interesting to think that the 928 was originally intended to replace the 911! How much better the world is with BOTH of these Porsches in it.

THE ESSENTIALS

Complete photos, videos, and inspection report available at www.ClassicPromenade.com.  It’s free to bid and only takes minutes to register.

This is an original and well preserved 1984 Porsche 928 S with the rare and very desirable 5-speed manual transmission! In its original beautiful shade of Ruby Red Metallic (L810/X7) and eye-catching chrome wheels, this 928 still shows well today. This car is owned by Classic Promenade and has been under our care for the last 4 months.

This Porsche was delivered new in Massachusetts, but has spent much time in California, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky, where we found it. We were drawn to the car for it’s originality and overall very well preserved condition. The service records dating back to 2017, a rust free body and undercarriage, a clean CARFAX, and its original gorgeous tan leather interior in excellent condition were among several of the things we love about this car. Be sure to see list of recent service work in bottom of description.

Paint meter readings indicate to us that this car was likely repainted at some time.  This 928 still shows beautifully and runs very nicely.  The Ruby Red Metallic has wonderful shine and luster, but is not without some minor fine scratches as shown in the inspection report.  The depth of the paint is rather amazing.  The small imperfections are from the limited use over the years, along the edges of the doors, hood and lower bumpers.  Today this 928 would perform well at local and regional car shows and touring events.  The chrome wheels really pop out next to the dark red paint and compliment the look of this Porsche. The previous owner informed us that the car originally had factory silver painted wheels which were chrome plated before he acquired it. We really like the look of the S4 spoiler over the rear deckled, and the popup headlights are “quirky” to say the least!

The interior is believed to be original. The very attractive Grey Beige Leather (6FL) and matching carpeting are both in very good to excellent condition, and come complete with power operated front seats.  The condition of the leather in the front seats is stunning and the rear seats suggest they have rarely, if ever, been sat in. The power operated sunroof is unusually small, and though the switch gear and motor work, it will only open about one inch. It was also noted that the cigarette lighter does function as a powerpoint, but that the heating element itself does not work. The dashboard is free of cracks, but there is some very mild warping around one of the defroster vents. Overall the interior is good. It does show it’s age in certain places, but the overall appearance is presentable.

The engine compartment is another unique and noteworthy element of this car. Porsche enthusiasts will already know that the 928 marks the first production V8 engine ever to come out of Weissach.  The 4.7 liter V8 produces 234 hp, which provides for a smooth and effortless driving experience. Our test drive impressions were overall very good. Steering, brakes, clutch and throttle all feel very good. The transmission engages well, though the shifter itself feels somewhat sloppy.  Nonetheless, it’s apparent that this car is in good running condition, has been well cared for, and that the 86K miles are original.

Overall this is a solid driving, good quality Porsche which could benefit from some minor work to make it really excellent. For full details on the condition of this 928, please see the attached Inspection Report.

The Hagerty Price Guide reflects a No. 3 value of $19,500 and a No. 2 value of $35,000.  We believe this to be close to No. 2- condition.

This Porsche is available for inspection at our Phoenix showroom. For details and information, please call, email or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or sales@classicpromenade.com.

The Porsche 928 is a luxury grand tourer produced from 1978 to 1995. Originally intended to replace the company's iconic 911, the 928 combined the power, poise, and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort, and equipment of a luxury sedan. Porsche executives believed such a flagship would have wider appeal than the compact 911. The 928 has the distinction of being the company's first production V8 powered model and its only coupé powered by a front-mounted V8 engine.
