Harry's Thoughts

This is a lovely Silver Shadow II that has accumulated 44k miles and has only had one prior owner. Being a multiple concours winner and owned by a master Rolls mechanic, it is ready to be enjoyed for show or touring.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautifully preserved and multiple award winning 1978 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II saloon that is mechanically excellent.  With only two owners from new and having accumulated a mere 44,000 miles, this is certainly one of the nicest preserved examples extant.  This Silver Shadow earned its First Place in the Concours competition at the 2019 RROC Annual Meeting in Detroit as well as the Cal West Award at the 2021 RROC Annual Meeting winning the highest scoring Silver Shadow considering mileage.

This Shadow was ordered new on Halloween of 1977 and was delivered on September 29, 1978 to Keith O’Rourke of Lenexa, KS through the Mark Motors, Inc. dealership in Overland Park, KS.  Mr. O’Rourke enjoyed the Silver Shadow until 2015 at which time it had accumulated 38,472 miles.  It’s present owner, Mr. Ralph Curzon, is a longtime RROC board member and master mechanic.  Mr. Curzon has shown the Shadow at two RROC Annual Meetings and it earned a First Place in Detroit in 2019 and the Cal West Award in 2021.  The Shadow presently has 44,000 miles and is all original and gorgeous.

The livery is Champagne (150-9546) with red and dark brown coachstripes.  The paint is all original and in beautiful condition with excellent shine and luster.  There are a few small areas where there is the normal cracking associated with the leaded seams.  We show these areas in detail in the photo gallery.  The stainless steel and chrome are in excellent condition.

The interior is also all original in its Tan Leather (VM846) and in excellent overall condition for its age and mileage.  The leather is soft and supple and shows minimal wear.  There are some areas of patina, especially on the driver’s seat.  These are shown in detail in the photo gallery.  This Shadow was special ordered with extra leather applied to the top roll, knee roll and center console.  The original wood dash also looks very nice with only very minor cracking.  The Deep Fawn carpet is in excellent condition and original matching mouton sheepskin overlays are as-new.  The Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with the separate 8-track player still reside in the dash.  All accessories and instruments work as they should.

The engine compartment is beautifully detailed and correct.  All systems and components work well, and all the major systems have been fully rebuilt, including the steering rack, hydraulic systems, carburetors, suspension, brakes, etc.  This Shadow drives beautifully as only a well maintained low-mileage example would.  This Shadow is complete with a large history file, its complete original owner’s manuals, tools, jack and spare.

Interesting Fact: The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a full-sized luxury car produced by British automaker Rolls-Royce in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first of the marque to use unitary body and chassis construction. The Silver Shadow II was produced from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run (Silver Shadow I + Silver Shadow II) has the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce.   In 1977, the model was renamed the Silver Shadow II in recognition of several major changes, most notably rack and pinion steering; modifications to the front suspension improved handling markedly. Externally, the bumpers were changed from chrome to alloy and rubber starting with the late 1976 Silver Shadows. These new energy-absorbing bumpers had been used in the United States since 1974, as a response to tightening safety standards there. Nonetheless, the bumpers on cars sold outside of North America were still solidly mounted and protruded 2 in (5 cm) less. Also now made standard across the board was the deletion of the small grilles mounted beneath the headlamps. Outside of North America, where tall curbs and the like demanded more ground clearance, a front skirt was also fitted to the Silver Shadow II and its sister cars.   In 1979, 75 Silver Shadow II cars were specially fitted to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the company with the original red "RR" badges front and rear, pewter/silver paint, grey leather with red piping, scarlet red carpets, and a silver commemorative placard on the inside of the glove box door. Approximately 33 75th anniversary cars were designated for and shipped to the North American market, making this an extremely rare find for collectors around the world!
