The iconic Ducati 990SS is one of the original super bikes! This one is a wonderful survivor.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is highly preserved and low mileage example of the venerable 1977 Ducati 900SS Desmo. With only 6,514 miles since new and largely original, this is a rare survivor. The 900SS is considered to be one of the great café racers from the 1970’s. The 990SS benefitted from many upgrades made to the frame, styling, and performance with its powerful 864 cu in, 80 HP engine.  Few have made it into the U.S., making this a great bike to add to your collection.  

 

In an article featured in the September 2001 edition of the The Classic MotorCycle magazine, the Ducati 900SS is “…one of the most visually alluring motorcycles ever built”.  This example is on its original chassis (No. 1777) with the iconic blue and silver paint scheme.  This 900SS features its original paint on the fuel tank, fairing, and fenders. It is increasingly difficult to find such excellent original examples, making this a rare survivor.   The current owner purchased this 900SS from Mark Cummings from Haltom, TX in May 2016. He then verified that the Ducati ran properly and decommissioned it as part of his collection of rare vintage motorcycles.   

 

There have been only minor updates to the bike from the previous owner, from the K&N intake to the see-through Desmo cover. The 900SS features Smiths tachometer and speedometer, Conti exhaust, and Borrani wheels.  

The striking and iconic silver and blue paint is mostly original and is in very nice overall condition. There are only a few minor paint chips on the front fender and behind the seat. The decals are showing their age with some cracking. The black vinyl seat appears original and is in very nice condition. This Ducati’s zipper on the seat is functioning properly, but is without its toolkit. The left side cover appears to have been repainted at some point as its patina than the original paint. The chrome and stainless steel components are all in very nice original condition.  

 

It comes with the original owner’s, parts manual and a lot of spare OEM parts from the previous owner who has been collecting parts for several years. Spare parts included in the sale front brake lever, Smiths gauges, oil filters, shocks, side stand, headlamp trim rings, sprockets, pipes, mufflers, and more.

1975 saw the introduction of the Ducati 900SS, a bike that had been developed with the sole intention of taking the fight to the ever increasing engine sizes fitted to the superbikes pouring out of Japan. Both the 750SS and 900SS shared almost all the same parts in order to lower production costs, the swept capacity of the 900 was actually 863.9cc and the engine kept the same twin Dellorto PHM 40mm carburetors. As the ’70s progressed the 900SS was slowly improved, the right side shifter switched to the left to meet US regulations, the kickstarter was improved, crank strength was upgraded, electrics were significantly de-bugged, and engine timing was improved. In 1979 the 900SS received a distinctive black paint job with gold accents as an appeal to the British market, the spoked wheels also disappeared in favor of cast Campagnolo wheels. Over the next few years the 900SS was transitioned into the Mike Hailwood Replica, and was eventually replaced by the S2.
