THE ESSENTIALS

SOLD! Off to Connecticut. 1966 Ford Cobra Shelby 427, This is a fantastic 427 Cobra reproduction that has the highest of attention to detail. With 20,228 miles and owned by a long time Ford Master Mechanic, this Cobra is ready to enjoy on the road, track or show field. And we love the Twilight Blue paint with classic white racing stripes. The paint is all original and is in excellent condition (no accidents or cracks, etc). Carrol Shelby signed the dash in 2008 and a letter of authenticity is included.

Built to exacting specifications in 1993 by High Tech Motor Sports in Scottsdale, AZ, this has won awards every time it’s been shown. Tom DiAntonio left Shelby to start his own company. His attention to detail and exacting standards were famous. He took no shortcuts, rebuilding the Cobras using the Shelby engineering diagrams. He made his cars both out of aluminum and fiberglass. This example is a fiberglass version. This is a tube frame, not the cheaper box frame. After many years, DiAntonio shuttered his company and returned to head Shelby’s bodyshop in Las Vegas.

The present owner, Lee Company of Clear Lake, Ca, bought the Cobra in Newport Beach, CA in 2002. At the time the Cobra had accumulated 6,500 miles. In December 1997, the engine had been rebuilt by Performance Associates of San Dimas, CA. The car had 4,789 miles on it and the engine rebuild cost $9,066. The receipt and photos document the rebuild.

The engine is a 1966 Ford 427 solid lifter, side oiler that was bored .30 over. The engine alone is about $40,000+. It has medium riser heads and four Weber carburetors. The Webers alone are worth about $7,000. It has 565HP. The engine was built with a Clay Smith cam and has benefitted from an electronic ignition system. It also has an auxiliary oil cooler, the Shelby aluminum finned 7 quart oilpan and a scatter shield installed. The fuel tank is an 18 gallon fuel cell.

This Cobra has lots of fine details that are rare to see, such as the turn signal stalk on the right side of the wheel, molded fiberglass ducting to cool the front brakes, the correct Stewart Warner gauges, the classic Mololita wood steering wheel, etc. The seats are newer and incredibly comfortable. They are upgraded with black leather seats from Superformance fitted with Simpson racing belts. The carpet is black German wool.

It has the Ford 9′ rear end with posi-traction and 3:50 gearing and the top loader four speed transmission with Hurst competition linkage. The suspension is adjustable coil over shocks all around with Aldon front shocks and QA rear shocks. The wheels are the classic looking 15″ Complomotive aluminum alloys (faux knock offs), 8″ wide front and 10″ for wide rear. Meaty BF Goodrich Radial T/A’s supply plenty of grip for the road.

The Cobra comes equipped with a tonneau cover, custom car cover, spare wheel and tire as well as the jack and handle. Other spares include an extra set of the upright bumpers (black), an extra faux knock off cap.

This is an excellent example of the Cobra legacy. This car needs nothing and is ready to enjoy. For more details please call Harry at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromande.com.

Interesting Fact: The Cobra Shelby, also known as the AC Shelby Cobra, is a classic sports car that was produced occasionally in England and America, starting in 1962. Utilizing a Ford V8 engine, the original Cobra Shelby is a two-door roadster with impressive power.   Carroll Shelby wanted to ask AC Cars if they would build him a custom vehicle that could accept a V8 engine. When they agreed, he went to Chevrolet in an attempt to get a V8, but they refused as they did not want competition for their models. Fortunately for Shelby, Ford was looking to create competition for Chevy and agreed to give Shelby their V8 engine.   Eventually, the Cobra Shelby developed and released multiple trims and packages that could help performance. This model was popular throughout Europe and America, with the car being sought after by sports car enthusiasts who desired a fast ride!
