This is a beautiful 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible with the very cool Pony Interior, a new 302 motor, and a new 4-speed transmission with factory A/C. This Mustang has been owned by a long time collector here in Phoenix for the last 20 years. Prior to coming to Arizona, this car had spent much time in Texas. Built on May 27, 1964 in the Dearborn, MI plant, this car was first sold through the Dallas district sales office (DSO 61).

This car is believed to be in largely original condition, as is evident by the authenticity of the interior and overall patina. The factory warranty plate (see tab) confirms this car was built as follows:

• Body – 76B Convertible with Luxury (Pony) Interior
• Color – Springtime Yellow (Paint Code 8)
• Trim – 69 Palomino Luxury Vinyl
• Axle – 2.80:1 (Code 6)
• Transmission – 3-speed manual (Code 1) – now a 4-speed manual
• Engine – 289 2v V8 (C Code) – now a 302 V8

Since its current owner purchase the car in 2001, nearly $10,000 worth of repairs and preventative maintenance have been invested, including a rebuild of the motor and a new transmission. Needless to say, this Mustang is in great condition, drives very well, and looks fantastic doing it!  We were pleasantly surprised how much power it exhibited accelerating through the gears.

More specifically, we are huge fans of the Springtime Yellow paint. There are several very minor chips and scratches (see photos), but overall the quality of the paint is excellent. It is free of any orange peel, major imperfections, and shows very well even in direct sunlight. Likewise the chrome work is very good.  The stainless steel windshield frame does have some light scratches which are noticeable in very bright, direct light. Overall though, these imperfections require an astute eye and do not at all detract from the car’s appeal.

The interior of this Mustang is significant for having what is known as the “Pony Interior,” an original Ford factory option in Palomino (light tan).  Only 5% of all 1965 Mustangs were ordered with the Pony Interior package making this an attractive and rare example.  The Pony Interior package included simulated wood grain steering wheel, door courtesy lights, embossed “Ponies” on the seat backs with chrome accents, woodgrain appliqué’s on the instrument and glovebox bezels, deluxe door panels with stainless steel trim and pistol grip handles, and a five dial instrument gauge cluster. 

The overall condition of this Mustang’s interior is very impressive. The seats hold their shape very nicely,  there are no signs of warping whatsoever. The dashboard and all major touchpoints are in good condition with little to no sign of wear. The carpeting is in good condition, as are the dashboard and all interior door / side panels. We did notice a small rip in the driver’s seat, and the trim pieces in both door jambs are showing some wear.  We noted that the cigarette lighter and horn do not work, and that the passenger seat does not slide fore and aft. Additionally, the white convertible top is in average condition and if the new owner will be using the convertible top, it would benefit from a replacement. The plastic window in the back is beginning to detach from the top, and there are two small holes on the passenger side (see photos). There are also a few very small stains / areas of discoloration, but overall it presents decent inside and out. 

Mechanically, this Mustang is in fantastic shape. A tremendous amount of work has gone into keeping this car in great running condition, and our 2.5 hour long inspection and test drive came back excellent. In fact this car has only driven 2,000 miles since the new motor and new 4-speed manual transmission (an upgrade from the original 3-speed) which were installed in 2014. Note, the 302 also has high-performance cams. On top of that, a long list of additional repairs and service work has been conducted, all with receipts. Finally, a brand new A/C compressor was installed, along with a complete A/C service and recharge.   The air conditioning works well and blows cold.  In short, this Mustang drives exactly like you would expect – powerful, smooth, and tons of fun! 

We’ve sold a number of these mid-60’s Mustangs and this one is certainly on par with many of them. Our overall impressions of this car are very good. While it may not win at Concours, it will turn heads going down the road and draw plenty of attention at a local or regional show.
