THE ESSENTIALS
This 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible is striking in its Tuxedo Black on red color combination and is sporty with its turbocharger and four-speed manual transmission. The lustrous paint, black canvas top and the very nice interior create a beautiful color combination that is perfect for tours and shows.
This Corvair Monza Spyder was produced the first week of December in 1964 at the Willow Run Factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan. By 2010, Ron Cooper of Oklahoma City acquired the Corvair and had much of the restoration work performed. During Mr. Cooper’s ownership, the Corvair underwent a fresh complete repaint in its original Tuxedo Black, the engine was rebuilt, the front suspension was rebuilt along with several other upgrades. Wayne Culbertson of Eiley, SC acquired the Monza Spyder approximately two years ago. Mr. Culbertson had driven the Corvair less than 2,000 miles while continuing to update it mechanically and cosmetically. Today, the Corvair has accumulated 79,000 miles from new and is free of rust.
We love the color combination! The Tuxedo Black livery is complemented by a single red pinstripe that follows the central body line. The paint is newer and is nice overall and perfect for local car shows, touring and as a classic driver. The chrome and stainless-steel trim are original and in good condition with some of the chrome showing light pitting. Overall, the trim looks very nice. The manual convertible top has been upgraded from vinyl to a high-quality black canvas and it looks fantastic. The wheel covers are the correct Monza covers and are in excellent condition and look great with the newer modern white walled radials. This Corvair also has dual side mirrors that are in excellent condition.
The interior features red vinyl seats with a velour insert. The red velour inserts are really a smart detail for keeping the seating surface cooler in the summer. The two front seats also have red seatbelts. The red dashboard and steering wheel are in excellent condition and look nearly new. The red loop carpeting also appears to be in excellent condition. The interior components were all sourced from Clark’s Corvair Parts. The Spyder also features a retro-look digital stereo and a very practical aftermarket center console with two cup holders and storage bins for phones and other items. Overall, the interior looks very nice and is ready to be enjoyed.
The air cooled and turbocharged 164 CID flat six-cylinder engine developed 150 hp and is in very nice condition after having been rebuilt in 2020. The manifold pressure is as it should be and the turocharger performs as it should. The engine has been recently resealed and has minimal leaking of oil. The four-speed manual transmission makes driving the Spyder a blast! By 1964, the Corvair suspensions were vastly improved and anti-roll bars had been added for safety and handling. The driving experience is unique on the Monza Spyder, they are very fun and agile.
