Harry's Thoughts

This is the show-stopping Buick Caballero estate wagon that has benefitted from a concours restoration. This will undoubtedly be an important addition to a collection of important 1950's American cars.

THE ESSENTIALS

PRICE REDUCED $10,000!  This is an incredibly rare and desirable 1958 Buick Century Caballero Estate Wagon that has benefitted from a full concours restoration and is certainly one of the very nicest extant.  Having accumulated 22,000 miles since new and being with its original Santa Barbara, CA owner for 46 years, this was the perfect wagon to restore into the very best.  This will not disappoint.

The Caballero was the most luxurious and expensive station wagon offered by any division at General Motors.  The wagon portions were built for Buick by the Ionia Manufacturing Company of Owasso, MI.  With only 4,456 built, only a small fraction exist today.  This Caballero is in concours condition today after receiving what was described as a frame-off restoration where all components had been thoroughly restored.  It has been well preserved and is today in gorgeous condition.  We estimate that the chrome and stainless restoration alone must have required an investment in excess of $25,000.

There have been only three owners of this wagon since new.  According to previous reports, this Caballeros was enjoyed by its original Santa Barbara owner until 2004.  It was then acquired by a collector that set out on what was described as a complete frame-off restoration.  While we do not have the restoration records, it would appear that it was completed about ten years ago.  It was then sold at the Gooding & Co. auction at Pebble Beach in 2013 to its present owner, who has recently passed.  We are selling this on behalf of his estate.

The livery is beautiful in Glacier White (Paint Code C) over Midnight Blue.  The paint is perfectly polished and is in concours condition.  There is an abundance of perfect chrome and beautifully polished stainless-steel trim everywhere.  The highly stylized and rare pillarless design is fantastic.

The interior is also gorgeous and as-new with its Red and White two tone Cordaveen vinyl (Trim Code 655), with all the correct finishes and materials.  We are impressed with the rear hatch glass and the quality of the mechanisms.

The engine compartment is finished to the very highest standards as well.  The venerable 364 CID OHV V8 was rated at 300 hp and it features the Dynaflow automatic transmission.  During its restoration, the front brakes were upgraded to 1961 Buick disc brakes for safety and usability.

Interesting Fact: The Buick Century is a model name for upscale full-sized cars that were produced on and off since the 1930s. A shorter and lighter model than modern Buick Century’s was released in 1936 which became the first generation of the Century.   A Fireball I8 engine is used in the original Buick Century that gave the model 141 horsepower and capable of sustaining 100 mile per hour speeds. Its first round of production stopped in 1942 when the model only accounted for 10 percent of Buick’s total production. In the following years, the Century changed drastically and introduced a new V6 engine meant to give the car more power.   Recent years have seen the Century turn into a standard sedan and fall out of general popularity with the public. However, the classic Buick Century is an absolute classic that is still searched for by car lovers due to how unique it has become following the different direction Buick ended up taking with design!
