Harry's Thoughts

Every 1957 or 1958 Eldorado Brougham is special and is an important part of American automotive history. This is very special being largely a beautiful survivor with its owner's manual and vanities.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautiful original 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham that can be enjoyed as-is as a preserved survivor.  This Brougham features most of its original paint, upholstery and carpeting.  Most all of the important accessories function well and, it has the vanities in the glovebox as well as in the rear seat armrest.  With Body No. 364, she is one of only 400 Broughams made in 1957.

364 was owned by Gil Dobbins from 1984 through about 2021, for 37 years.   According to Mr. Dobbins, he acquired 364 from its second owner.  The Brougham had retained its original air suspension, which is incredibly rare as the system was antiquated and failed often even when new.  This Brougham has now been upgraded with a modern air suspension.

The elegant and deep Ebony black paint (Paint Code 110) is a combination of original and touched up areas and today has gorgeous luster.  Of course, it has many areas that are showing some of the normal cracking associated with the lead body filler used by Cadillac in 1957.  Overall, it has a consistent patina with the rest of the Brougham.  The chrome and stainless are in overall good original condition and the cast aluminum bumpers have been beautifully rechromed.

We love her Light Gray Mojave Cloth complimented by Light Gray leather (Trim No. 1411), especially with the designer styled seating. Even the original lush custom light gray Karakul Pile carpet looks nice, with little signs of wear.  It is all original and in excellent condition.  The touchpoints are all in very nice condition, including the interior chrome.

The vanities are quite complete, amazing and impressive.  The vanities include the full cosmetic compact, lipstick, comb, cigarette case, tissue case, magnetic shot glasses in the glovebox, as well as the upgraded correct vintage Arpege perfume bottle in its original box, Cross pen accessorized writing notebook and beveled mirror in the rear armrest.  These are authentic and a mixture of original accessories and correct replacements.  It is rare to see the vanities complete.

The venerable 365 CID V8 delivers 335 hp through its triple Rochester carburetors.  The carburetors all work well, and the engine runs beautifully and smooth.  It runs and drives well and most of the accessories work. We love the electrically operated trunk opener and closer.  The air conditioning blows cold at 38 degrees Fahrenheit.  The automatic seat works, the memory seat function works intermittently, and the seat is adjustable through the controls.  Even all of the windows operate.  The clock and antenna do not work.

The engine compartment has benefited from some detailing. You can see from the photos that it is a mix of original preserved and restored.  The oil pressure and operating temperature are good and the car feels solid on the road. Everything feels tight and in good operating order.  This Brougham had retained its original air suspension until just a few years ago when it was upgraded to a modern RideTech air suspension.  We have had the air suspension dialed in and the Brougham rides well now.

364 comes complete with its very rare Brougham specific owner’s manual.

The Cadillac Eldorado is a luxury car manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1952 until 2002 over twelve generations. The Eldorado was at or near the top of the Cadillac line. The original 1953 Eldorado convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models of 1957–1960 had distinct bodyshells and were the most expensive models that Cadillac offered those years. The Eldorado was never less than second in price after the Cadillac Series 75 limousine until 1966. Starting in 1967 the Eldorado retained its premium position in the Cadillac price structure, but was built in high volumes on a unique two door personal luxury car platform.
