From the Driver’s Seat - Our team’s personal take on what makes this classic stand out
THE ESSENTIALS
The 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Open Two-Seater represents the evolution of one of the most celebrated postwar British sports cars. Building on the achievements of the XK120, the XK140 introduced improved interior space, rack-and-pinion steering, better braking, and modernized suspension with telescopic shock absorbers. This matching-numbers example, chassis number S810811, combines originality, heritage, and performance. Powered by its factory 3.4L DOHC inline-six engine rated at 210 bhp with twin SU H6 carburetors, the XK140 MC delivers an engaging driving experience with true open-air motoring pleasure. With only 34,495 miles recorded and 730 miles added by the current owner since 2011, this Jaguar represents a finely preserved and well-loved example ideal for concours presentation or spirited touring.
This XK140 MC was distributed in March 1955 through Max Hoffman’s New York dealership, a well-known importer responsible for introducing many iconic European marques to American enthusiasts. The Jaguar was delivered in Suede Green with a Tan leather interior and French Grey hood. The Jaguar retains its original chassis, engine, and body verified by its Heritage Trust documentation. During the 1980s, this XK140 participated in numerous concours events, with several plaques mounted on the dashboard as testament to earlier show history. Period records and online references suggest that the Jaguar underwent a careful restoration in 1996 by a Kentucky collector, at which time the exterior color was changed to Cream (Old English White) with Black leather interior. During the Jaguar’s history, the gearbox was replaced with a five-speed manual transmission. Under current ownership since 2011, the Jaguar has been carefully maintained with marque specialists, driven sparingly, and housed in a climate-controlled environment.
The exterior presentation of this Open Two-Seater is finished in elegant cream that shows as white which retains gloss and depth. The paint is in overall good condition with very light fissures showing on the front end and some near chrome accents. The body panels remain straight and well-aligned, highlighting the design’s sweeping fenders and distinctive bonnet line. The one-piece cast grille with broad vertical bars features the iconic Jaguar badge, while the rear trunk proudly displays the “Winner Le Mans 1951–3” emblem commemorating the marque’s historic racing success. Chrome trim, including the hood and trunk accent strips are in great condition. The Jaguar has Lucas fog lamps, windshield wipers, and chrome wire wheels fitted with Pirelli tires. The black canvas top folds neatly behind the seats, maintaining the clean silhouette that defined the XK’s timeless design.
The interior of this XK140 is both purposeful and refined, designed to immerse the driver in the essential sports car experience of the 1950s. The LHD cockpit features supple Black leather seats and matching carpets, all in good condition, with ample legroom for comfort during extended drives. The leather-trimmed dash is in excellent condition with Smith instruments that are fully functional. A signed dash plate identifies the Jaguar as a certified replica of the record-setting XK140 that achieved 141.51 mph at Jabbeke, Belgium, a reminder of the engineering excellence that defines this model. The interior is in overall great condition with some areas that show the Jaguar’s age and gentle use. This Jaguar is perfect for weekend drives and would be welcome in local and regional shows.
Mechanically, this XK140 MC performs as expected from one of Jaguar’s most celebrated postwar sports cars. The 3.4l DOHC inline-six engine delivers 210 bhp to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The MC specification, representing “Modified Competition,” was the most desirable variant offered, featuring higher performance tuning inspired by Jaguar’s competition engines. Rack-and-pinion steering provides precision and control, while the chassis delivers predictable handling and road feel. With its strong compression, smooth shifting, and excellent braking, this Jaguar is a delight to drive. The Jaguar has been recently serviced and excellently maintained over the years. Notable servicing in 2025 includes brakes, differential, carburetors, replaced engine mounts and a new battery. Tires were replaced in 2022 with less than 100 miles added. This Jaguar is in excellent mechanical condition and is ready to be enjoyed!
This XK140 comes with a black soft top with removeable side windows, maintenance records since 2006, a clean AZ title, and the certificate of authenticity from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.
