THE ESSENTIALS

This is a gorgeous example of 30,000 original mile of Post-War custom coachbuilding: the H.J. Mulliner Sport Saloon on a Bentley Mk VI chassis.  This motorcar features three documented owners since new and, importantly, was imported into Southern California in 1977.  This features the handsome and somewhat rakish Sport Saloon coachwork that is lightweight as it benefits from ample use of aluminum throughout.  We have completed a thorough service, complete new leather interior, Wilton wool carpeting, new WWW radials, etc.  This is ready for tour or show!

In June 2012 this Bentley was awarded a second place at the Dana Point Concours d’Elegance.  The first place winner was the 2011 Pebble Beach Best of Show winning Voisin owned by the Mullin Collection!!  Although this Bentley is not what we consider a concours contender it is always welcomed and sometimes awarded!

The Bentley runs and drives very well.  We have invested in complete servicing and have driven it about 1,200 miles since getting it back on the road!!  We love how sporty she is on the road, with the lightweight body and the huge sunroof!!

History of B384BH

This Bentley (B384BH) was custom ordered new by A.J. Logette, Esq. who was a partner at Miller Engineering Products, ltd. outside London (W4).  He was very particular in his order, as he wanted fender mirrors on both wings, a very specific two tome grey livery with grey leather interior (including a slip cover for the drivers seat).  He even specified for the addition of a secret cut-off so the car could be kept from being stolen!

B384BH was delivered by H.J. Mulliner as a completed motorcar to Mr. Logette on January 20th, 1948.  From records it appears as though Mr. Logette used the car minimally and kept it for nearly 29 years.

B384BH was then sold to Mr. Frank Smith who was a writer for Disney Studios in California.  Mr. Smith fell in love with the sleek lines of the car and imported it into the US.  Mr. Smith hired Jim Rickman of Rickman Motors to service the car and, according to Mr. Rickman, the car needed nothing but normal maintenance.  It was a very nice original low mileage Mk VI.

Mr. Smith was soon diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 1979.  Before passing he asked Rickman Motors to sell the car.  It was advertised in the RROC Flying Lady for sale “Certainly the most stylish 4-Dr saloon available on this chassis.  $17,250.”  That was an enormous sum of money for a Mk VI in 1979!!  The Bentley had accumulated approximately 25,000 miles by then.  But this was a low mileage rust free example- very rare even back then!

The car was bought in 1979 by Mr. Louis Scalise from Pasadena.  Louis had a collection of cars and this was one of the cars he loved to look at.  The sleek and stylish lines captivated him.  Between business and his large collection of cars he put only a few thousand miles on the car.

Over the years he had the car repainted and reupholstered.  Mr. Scalise kept the car for 32 years as the third owner since new.

Since we acquired the Bentley we have had a full re-commissioning from Rolls-Royce factory trained expert Roger Ford.  We had Roger replace various rubber in the front end, a complete brake rebuild (including master, slave rebuilds, hoses, All new brake linings, servo disc shaving, etc), rebuilt water pump, new fluids, new radiator hoses, new fan belt, tune-up, etc.  This Mk VI runs and drives superbly as only a very low mileage Bentley should!!

The chassis is amazingly clean and the original gators are in very nice condition protecting the rear leave springs.  Of course, this is additional evidence proving that this is a well loved low mileage motorcar.

We custom ordered new Diamondback Yokohama wide white wall radials for the car.  The ride and handling are superb with the new radials mounted.  We have installed a full leather interior in light grey with darker grey piping and proper grey Wilton wool carpeting.  The interior is gorgeous!!

The Bentley would benefit further with some refinishing of its interior wood as well as some additional sorting out of electrical wiring in general.  When the motorcar was repainted several items were not properly wired.  The lights, radio, instruments and clock work well.  The horn and trafficators are not working.

With 30,000 original miles this Bentley is a true gem!  It has the nearly complete full tray of small tools and all of the larger tools and flashlight, etc.  It still has its original spare tire and wheel mounting in the proper compartment.  We’ve put about 1,200 miles on this Bentley over the past several months.

The Bentley is complete with its original owners manual (not a reproduction) and we have all the Mulliner build sheets and all RROC and RREC chassis and historical information.  This is a full documented and proper motorcar.

This Bentley qualifies for all of the Classic Car Club of America events  as a Full Classic and we will be participating in RROC events as well.

Bentley themselves refused to release the horsepower of the Mark VI, but the 4.5-liter straight-six engine is sure to provide a strong amount of power to the vehicle. Originally when this car was introduced, there was a shortage of steel across Europe which created a shortage for this vehicle. Despite this fact, the Mark VI was a popular choice and were heavily sought after.
