Harry's Thoughts

My very first Packard was a 1941 120 Club Coupe. It was also my very first full restoration, back in 1990. These are a design favorite of mine!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a nice driver quality 1941 Packard 120 Club Coupe that is rust free and is a largely original car that has been restored only as-needed.  The 1941 Packard Club Coupe has a wonderful design that has a sporty elegance in the front end and a sexy curvaceous rear end.  This is a Packard that can be enjoyed as-is or improved over time.

This Packard was bought new from the Packard dealership in Clinton, Iowa on the 2nd of May, 1941.  From Iowa, this Packard spent much of its life in Wisconsin.  The present owner bought the Packard in 2021 in Wisconsin from a collection.  Overall, it is a very nice original car that has had modest refinishing over the years.

The Packard Maroon livery is a nice older repaint that is of touring quality.  The finish itself is quite nice with a beautiful polish and shine.  The chrome has mostly been replated and looks very nice.  The important pieces, such as the distinctive grills and bumpers are in excellent condition.  A few items, such as the door handles, remain original and are just good.  The stainless is well polished and in very good to excellent condition.  The bumper guards have the accessory grill guards in front and the trunk guard in back.  The front also features the amber fog lights. The tires are nice wide white walls.

The interior is a more modern style gray cloth, and the carpeting is complementary darker gray nylon.  Amazingly, the dashboard is original and in good condition.  The original faux woodgraining is still visible and in good condition.  All of the dash plastic, which are normally warped beyond functionality, are in good condition.  This is evidence that the Packard was well cared for over the years.  The gauges work and the wiper motors and switch work, but it is missing the wiper arms and blades.  The instruments and gauges all work but the clock is not working.

The venerable 288 cid straight eight has good power and sounds strong.  The three speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and operates well.  This is a Packard that has a comfortable cruising speed of 60-65 mph on the highway.  The engine compartment and chassis could benefit from further detailing and the horns are presently disconnected.

The series name One-Twenty officially became hyphenated for model year 1940. Again, the One-Twenty came in a full array of body styles, including a semi-custom Convertible Victoria by Howard "Dutch" Darrin. Introduced in August 1939, total model year output was 28,138 units. In its final year as a model, the One-Twenty lost a number of body styles to the expanded One-Ten line of cars. The One-Twenty was available in business coupé, club coupe, two-door sedan, four-door sedan, convertible coupe, convertible sedan, and two station wagon styles. Production sank to 17,100 units.
