THE ESSENTIALS
This is a very nice California and Arizona example of a 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special that is a multi-award concours winner after benefiting from a full restoration several years ago. The livery and interior show well overall. With a low-mileage, complete engine rebuild and a newer transmission, this Fleetwood is ready to national tours or regional shows.
This 60 Special was produced in February of 1941 and shipped to Valley Motor Company in Bakersfield, CA. It was first registered in October 1941. The early history of the Fleetwood is mostly unknown until a Northrup engineer sold the Fleetwood in 1974 to Bruce Hyatt of Thousand Oaks, CA. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hyatt sold the Cadillac to Fernando Altavilla, an employee of George Hormel who was an heir to the Hormel meat-packing empire. The Cadillac became part of the Hormel Automotive Collection. Several years later, the Cadillac was resold to Bruce Hyatt. Mr. Hyatt then sold the Fleetwood to Dr. Gene Baroway, a dentist in Thousand Oaks, CA. Dr. Baroway commissioned a complete restoration of the Cadillac and it soon won several Southern CA concours awards. Upon the passing of Dr. Baroway, the Cadillac was acquired in 1993 by Don Klusman, a CCCA Member who resided in Scottsdale, AZ. When the the Cadillac was acquired by Mr. Klusman, it had accumulated 54,000 miles from new. Mr. Klusman toured the Cadillac in at least seven CARavan events in the Eastern and Northwestern US. Mr. Klusman enjoyed the Fleetwood for over 33,000 miles. The current owners, John and Cheryl Ossenfort of Flagstaff, AZ, acquired the Fleetwood on April 17, 2005 and have driven it approximately 10,000 miles while attending several CARavans throughout the US.
The livery has a nice luster and shine in beautiful deep Antoinette Blue (Paint Code 51). There are a few small paint imperfections noticeable upon close inspection. The chrome and bright work are in nice overall condition with minor scuff marks from normal use. The wide white wall tires accompanied by chrome wheel covers with red insets show well and nicely complement the deep blue paint. The original Cadillac spotlight functions, but the housing is showing damage. The exterior of the Cadillac shows well overall and is perfect for tours.
The interior is in very nice overall condition due to the earlier restoration. The gray wool broadcloth Bedford cord upholstery is finished with light gray piping and beautifully complements the deep blue exterior. The upholstery presents well overall showing little wear from normal use. The dark blue carpet and accompanying dark blue floor mats are in nice condition but show minor areas of wear. The overall dash and interior chrome are in very nice condition with all gauges and the clock functioning as designed. The radio is original equipment and shows very well.
The engine compartment has been nicely detailed and painted and is home to the 346 ci Flathead V-8 producing 150 hp at 3,400 rpm. The Flathead block was replaced and underwent a complete rebuild in 2002 and has accumulated approximately 17,000 since. The transmission was replaced with a 1947 Cadillac Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine runs strong and well and the transmission shifts nicely and performs quietly.
This Fleetwood comes complete with the Operating Hints Manual, A Guide for the Cadillac Enthusiasts, 1941 Cadillac Marketing Brochure, Repair and Tune Up Manual, 1941 Shop Manual, 1941 Serviceman and Service Bulletins, Cadillac Thoro-Check Engine Diagnosis Manual, 1941 Fischer Body Manual, Two Hydra-Matic Transmission Service Manuals and Countless tech articles. Also accompanying the Fleetwood is a list and collection of spare parts and approximately 2″ of service and parts receipts.
