Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice older restoration of the very rare 1940 LaSalle Convertible Sedan. This would be perfect for showing, touring and loading up with friends and family to enjoy!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautiful older restoration of a rare 1940 LaSalle Series 52 Convertible Sedan that can be driven and enjoyed and presented at local and regional car shows.  Being the 66th of 125 made for the 1940 Series 52 model year, this is an incredibly rare example.  The survival rate of the LaSalle’s through WWII and later was very low.  This LaSalle is in overall No. 2 condition and drives very well.  This would be a wonderful CCCA CARavan car and can be used for regional concours events.

The livery is a beautiful deep Antoinette Blue (Paint Code No. 2) that looks black but lights up as a gorgeous blue in the sunlight.  The paint has a nice luster and finish that is show quality.  There is one dent that is very hard to see on the drivers’ front fender, otherwise the paint is excellent.  The chrome and stainless on the bumpers, door handles and trim moldings look great.  We love the art deco stylized airplane wing bumper guards.  This is a running board delete example which offers a very sleek and sexy look.  The wheels are featured in Vincennes Red with dual tan pinstripes.  The tan canvas convertible top is somewhat faded as it is older, but it fits well and is easy to raise and lower.  The top boot is also older but fits very well.  The dual side mirrors are very functional and look correct.  We love how the LaSalles look without the side mounts making them much more streamlined and modern in appearance.

The interior has newer Burgundy Red Leather (Trim Code 28) that looks terrific with the dark blue exterior and feels very soft and supple.  The maroon carpeting also looks very nice, and the dashboard is in very nice condition.  The chrome and stainless for the interior are also in excellent condition.  The instruments work as they are supposed to, and the steering wheel is in excellent condition.

The LaSalle 322 CID V8 is said to produce 130 hp and performs well with its three-speed transmission that has the column shifter.  It has benefitted from a new wiring harness and the engine compartment has been recently detailed and is in overall show condition.  The chassis has also been painted and looks great.  The Series 52 has the 123-inch chassis.

In its final years, the LaSalle Series 39-50 was once again more Cadillac-like in its appearance and details, and was essentially identical to the Cadillac Series 61. The narrow radiator grille opening was retained and was flanked by additional side grille work which aided in heat dissipation from the engine. Headlights, which had moved down and been secured to the body between the grille and the fender, were again attached to the radiator shell. LaSalle also added a sunroof, marketed as the "Sunshine Turret Top". Sales climbed from 15,501 in 1938 to 23,028 in 1939.[1] The final 1940 LaSalles were introduced in October 1939 with a full array of semi-custom body styles, as it had in its first year, including a convertible sedan. Earl oversaw this redesign. The LaSalle emerged with a smooth-flowing design, its thin radiator flanked by a series of thin chrome slots. In its final year, sales of the LaSalle reached the second-highest level ever at 24,133.[1] In addition to the Series 40-50, there was also the lower, wider Series 40-52 Special using General Motors' new "Torpedo"-style body.
