Harry's Thoughts

We believe this to be the very best styled Silver Ghost built after WWI. The gorgeous Ascot dual cowl phaeton body on a Springfield Silver Ghost chassis is unbeatable. We are excited to help S206ML find her next fortunate caretaker.

THE ESSENTIALS

We believe this 1925 Rolls-Royce Springfield Silver Ghost may be the best looking “Post-War” Silver Ghost in existence.  This Ghost (S206ML) has won several national awards with the RROC and, more importantly, has toured for tens of thousands of miles throughout three different continents.  S206ML is ready to be enjoyed on the concours field as well as tours anywhere in the world.

S206ML was ordered new for Paul Grant of NYC being delivered as a Sudbury sedan on May 18, 1926.  S206ML was one of the last series of Silver Ghost chassis to be delivered from the USA factory in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Thus, its left-hand drive configuration and the best engineering developments offered by Springfield.  S206ML has been included in the RROC directories and publications since 1958, shortly after the club was founded.  Her history is very well documented in multiple books, factory records and RROC magazines.  By 1965, S206ML was owned by A. Harling from Maryland until acquired by Kenneth Wessel from Ohio in December 1986 as a pristine original car with less than 18,000 miles from new.  Mr. Wessel set out on a complete restoration of her and earned an award at the 1990 RROC Annual Meeting in its present Ascot dual cowl phaeton configuration.  By 2004, S206ML was acquired by the most admired Silver Ghost restorer in North America, Mr. Steve Littin from Ohio.  Steve Littin earned a first place in the Touring Class for her at the RROC Annual Meeting in 2004 and at the 2006 Annual Meeting she earned the Best of Prior Prewar Touring Best of Show and the Most Silent Ghost.  Mr. Littin also toured 6,000 miles across New Zealand with her with stellar performance. On March 30, 2011, she was acquired by her present owner for $425,000.

Subsequent to her acquisition, she benefitted from a $60,000 investment in a lacquer repaint in Belgium and retrimming in Switzerland.  With her restoration freshened by her present owner, S206ML went on to win honors at the 2011 BCCM St. Moritz Concours, 2013 Basel Paris RAID Concours and Best of Show at the 2018 Park Place Concours in Dallas where she beat a competing Bugatti.  She is still in gorgeous condition for concours or for touring.

The livery is spectacular with its nearly perfect burgundy lacquer paint complemented by spectacular polished aluminum and nickel-plated components.  Being a Springfield Silver Ghost in such a sporting body, the wide white walled tires look just right.  The tan canvas convertible top sits on top of the very low and rakish windshield that folds down flat if so desired.  The angles of the front and rear windshield are the same and look incredibly sporty.  Overall, this is the best-looking Silver Ghost from the “Post-War” period.  We love its gorgeous dual cowl Ascot Sport Phaeton body as it combines the very best of both worlds: a very late Springfield Ghost chassis with the later stunning Ascot body.  To see this in person is to be captivated by its presence.

The interior benefitted from a $20,000 investment in its correct tan leather with just the right amount of patina.  The interior is surrounded with gorgeous wood with two complete bands of inlaid mother of pearl. The wood is held in place by closely placed flat head screws with each screw being perfectly aligned.  This is the attention to detail involved in its restoration.

The engine compartment is very well done, showing some patina from its tens of thousands of miles of touring.  We are continuing to detail her and will have her in concours condition in the coming weeks.  The 7,428 CC Inline 6-Cylinder Engine is incredibly powerful and, more importantly, reliable for touring.  S206ML has never failed to start and operate faithfully on its tours in Australia, New Zealand as well as throughout Europe and the United States.  The addition of a Gear Vendor overdrive makes it a wonderful touring experience even on today’s highways.  The chassis is beautifully detailed in burgundy and would be very presentable for concours display with simple additional detailing.  S206ML is powerful and smooth.

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts are supported by a very large community of owners and specialists.  The Silver Ghost Association and the Silver Ghost Register are incredible resources.  Also, Silver Ghost only tours are held around the world as these cars were designed to last forever and are powerful and handle exceptionally well for the era.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost name refers both to a car model and one specific car from that series. Originally named the "40/50 h.p." the chassis was first made at Royce's Manchester works, with production moving to Derby in July 1908, and also, between 1921 and 1926, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Chassis no. 60551, registered AX 201, was the car that was originally given the name "Silver Ghost." Other 40/50 hp cars were also given names, but the Silver Ghost title was taken up by the press, and soon all 40/50s were called by the name, a fact not officially recognized by Rolls-Royce until 1925, when the Phantom range was launched. The Silver Ghost was the origin of Rolls-Royce's claim of making the "best car in the world" – a phrase coined not by themselves, but by the prestigious publication Autocar in 1907.
