It is no secret I love Packards, and this particular example is no exception. I had the chance to preview this car in person, and it's outstanding mechanical and cosmetic really is impressive!

ONLINE ONLY AUCTION at www.classicpromenade.com.  We are proud to auction this 1936 Packard 120 Convertible Coupe with dual side mounts and rumble seat.  As an older award-winning restoration, with only a little detailing this Packard can used for both showing or touring.  The styling of this model is quite exceptional, notice the rakish chrome windshield frame that make it look more like a roadster than a convertible coupe.  But the utility of the wind-up windows are there when needed.

This particular Packard sold new in Philadelphia, PA on March 18, 1936. It has spent most of its life in the possession of a Mr. Jack Willam Kruse of Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Kruse purchased the vehicle with 30,000 actual miles. He has fully restored the vehicle and has owned it for several decades. Upon the death of Mr. Kruse, his son, Kolby, inherited the vehicle. However, due to medical reasons, Kolby was unable to drive. 

In 2016 the Packard was sold to its current owner. Since then, it has been kept in a private collection in Albuquerque, NM. The complete history of this Packard is very much paraphrased in this description. In fact, this car has a substantial amount of paperwork and documentation telling much of the story this car has experienced. 

Throughout its life, this car has hardly been driven. Only 365.5 miles per year to be exact! Given its low millage and meticulous care, this Packard is not requiring any mechanical attention. The venerable 282 CID straight eight offered 110 hp that was transmitted through its three-speed transmission.  The 120 model was the first in the Packard lineup to offer hydraulic brakes.  The drivetrain components and accessories function as designed, but we would recommend further recommissioning prior to touring.  With only minor detailing, the engine and chassis can be ready for show.  The charging system has been converted to an alternator and we are awaiting details as to if it has been converted to a 12 volt system.  

Cosmetically this Packard looks like new. Truly, the classic Tabaco Cream paint is in outstanding condition despite its age and is free from any noticeable blemishes. The paint is complimented with a red coachstripe that accents the lines, especially with the optional artillery wheels and dual side mounted spares.  The tan Haartz cloth convertible top is in beautiful condition and fits tight and is complete with the complementing top boot.  The running board rubber is still like new.  Other optional features include side wind deflectors, fog lights and accessory turn signal indicators for safety while touring.  

The beige leather interior is equally as nice with all materials and touch points showing little to no sign of wear.  The rumble seat is also in matching beige leather and in excellent condition.  You may have noticed a missing gauge cluster in our photos. That particular item was out for repair during the time of the photoshoot. Updated photos will be uploaded upon completion. 

We are very fond of all things Packard, having dealt with many of them over the years. We are very confident in saying that this particular example meets our expectations for quality and condition, and we know that it’s new owner will not be disappointed with their purchase.

John and Richard, I just heard back from the mechanic. He called in sick and will not be able to go see the car. So we will not have answers for you until next week. Specifically, the answers to the questions about 6v vs 12v, grounding, instruments, oil leaks and the rumble seat lines. I was told that the instruments were repaired and ready for installation. The car would be sold with the charging system working and the instrument cluster installed and working. The seller is on his boat in FL and cannot help us either. As an exception to our policies because of this circumstance, I can say that the seller will stand behind the condition of the car and if the buyer is not satisfied with the answers to these questions and video of it running after the auction closes, both the seller and Classic Promenade will refund any fees or deposits made toward the purchase of the Packard. It would likely be the end of next week until we have the answers, video, etc. I hope this helps. Thanks, Harry

Harry, Any answer to my questions about the possible mismatch on rumble seat back and the seat itself? Any comments on the apparent oil leaks around the engine and by spark plug 7? Richard Greenfield

Any comment on the 12-volt conversion? Has the defective instrument been repaired and changed to 12 V? Have all other technical systems also been converted to 12 V? Can the car be rebuilt to the original 6V? Are all parts still available?
We are still waiting for a video of the running engine!

Hi John, we have reviewed the photo of the engine block, and Harry says that it is the paint peeling. In order to make the car show-worthy, it is going to need some detailing and re-painting of the engine. Let us know if you have any other questions. -Carey

The only item on this car that I question is why would a car collector own such a “original” low mile car and change the charging system from a 6 volt positive ground to alternating current? You can barely see the alternator in one of the engine bay photos. It makes no sense on such a nice car. That is why the gauge is out of the dash cluster, it must need to be “repaired” to work with alternating current. Harry and I have exchanged emails regarding this issue and I am waiting for an explanation. Harry stated that he didn’t see the alternator in the engine bay until I pointed it out yesterday. The reason I wrote to Harry is that I happen to own a 1936 Packard 120B, with a 6 volt positive ground system with a generator. I hope the Seller has the generator and the gauge to include in the sale.

You are right! There is quite a bit of glare. The Austin Healy Sprite is really bad because it was in front of a huge green tool box. It may be also what is being picked up on this Packard. It is the right color for the car, that’s for sure. And a very high quality paint job on a great car. Harry

Interesting Fact: The Packard 120 was produced from 1935 to 1937, with a two-year gap before beginning production again from 1939 to 1941. Sometimes known as the Packard One-Twenty, this vehicle replaced the 200 and also signified the first time Packard entered the mid-priced eight-cylinder car market.   Packard was traditionally a luxury brand, but this was not a sustainable option amidst the Great Depression. Due to this, the company had to release a mid-priced vehicle that could keep them afloat, and the 120 was the perfect choice. Buyers who wanted to own a Packard made car could finally afford a model, which brought both popularity and sales to the company.   The Packard engine used in the first generation of the 120 was an inline-eight that allowed the car to hit a top speed of 85 miles per hour. True to their mid-priced goal, the low end of the 120s went on sale for $980, which was equivalent to about $18,500 today. During its first year, it peaked production at 55,042 units. There were minor changes with the next generation, but the vehicle itself stayed relatively the same. Given Packard’s history as a luxury auto company, finding a 120 is rare due to how cheap it was compared to the rest of the line!
