Harry's Thoughts

This is a very rare find. The rare Bentley Arnage Green Label with one owner for the past 23 years and only 19,000 miles. This is a treasure that is almost in showroom condition. I love the color combination, too. You'll never, ever, see another one!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a very rare 1999 Bentley Arnage Green Label that has a mere 19,000 miles from new and is in nearly showroom new condition.  As a Green Label Arnage, it features the BMW sourced drivetrain which is highly desirable for its dependability and ease of servicing.  This is a very rare find, and nearly impossible to replicate with so few miles and in this condition.  It is also shown in its original gorgeous and rare Wildberry livery (Paint Code 9560006) and with its unusual and rare special order vertical grill vanes that were ordered through Mulliner Park-Ward.

From the July 1998 test drive article from MotorTrend: “Designed to be “the world’s most exhilarating four-door driving experience,” the all-new Bentley Arnage is the first model in nearly 60 years with a powerplant uniquely developed for the marque, the first in Bentley’s 94-year history to have a body assembled “in-house” at the Crewe factory of parent company Rolls-Royce, and the last to be brought to market before Rolls and Bentley were bought by BMW.”

This Green Label was ordered new on 21st of July 1998 through Larry Dimmit Cadillac in Port Everglades, FL for Mr. Richard Donner of Osprey, FL.  The MSRP was $205,812.  Mr. Donner enjoyed the Bentley from when he received it on the 21st of July 1998 until he passed in 2000.  The second owner was Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ragel of Phoenix, AZ.  Mr. Ragel enjoyed the Bentley for 23 years having acquired it in January 2001 for $150,000 and owned it until April 2024.  He acquired the Bentley with over 13,000 miles and today it has just over 19,000 miles.  The Bentley was consistently serviced at the local Scottsdale Bentley dealerships and a major service was performed in February 2024 from a local specialist.

Its original Wildberry paint is nearly in showroom condition with only a few small imperfections which we highlight in the photo gallery on our website.  The paint has gorgeous shine and luster and there has been no paint work or accidents in its history.  The 17-inch painted alloy wheels are as-new as well.  As mentioned, this Bentley was specially ordered new with rare vertical grill vanes, which harkens back to the Derby Bentleys.  Overall, the exterior is in stunning original condition.

The interior is equally gorgeous in its Cotswold hide complimented by Wildberry piping and carpeting.  The leather is in excellent condition and nearly in showroom condition throughout, including the special-order shift knob in Cotswold hide.  The burl walnut wood is also nearly as new.  There is none of the common cracking due to excessive heat as this Bentley was kept in a conditioned garage.  The original sound system still works well, and the seats, mirror and other adjustment controls function well.  The gauges are beautiful with their ivory facia.  Overall, the interior is in stunning original condition.

The Bentley was ordered with its two Bentley umbrellas which are still retained in pristine trunk.  The rear seats naturally recline and are very comfortable.  This Bentley comes complete with all of its original books and manuals as well as a copy of its factory window, build records, many service invoices and more.  The most recent major service included all of the common suspension, brake and service issues, making this a reliable Bentley that can be immediately enjoyed.

The beauty of the Bentley Arnage Green Label is the BMW 4 ½ Liter twin-turbocharged V8 that was engineered by Cosworth Engineering with its double overhead 32-value engine and fitted to its BMW supplied five-speed automatic transmission and Adaptive Traction Control.  This produces about 350 horsepower and 420 ft lbs of torque, making for exhilarating performance.  Launching this 5,300 pound luxury car to 149 mph.

During the takeover battle in 1998 between BMW and Volkswagen Group for ownership of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motors, BMW had threatened to stop supply of their engines if Volkswagen Group won. While the threat was later withdrawn in conjunction with BMW acquiring the right to manufacture Rolls-Royce automobiles at a new location, it was clear that Volkswagen could not accept the business and reputation risks associated with having their rival as a long-term business partner. Furthermore, customers were uncertain about engine and part availability (of which there turned out to be no issue) and orders for new cars dropped precipitously. Volkswagen's response was to adapt the old 16-valve, 6.75-litre pushrod engine from the (Mulsanne) Turbo R for the Arnage body, which had been designed for the smaller and much lighter BMW 32-valve V8. Coupled with an outdated 4-speed automatic gearbox from General Motors, the engine was extremely thirsty, and would not meet government-imposed emissions standards without hasty modifications.
