Harry's Thoughts

Many consider the W124 class to be the last "true Mercedes." Combined with a Porsche V8 and a very interesting production story, this really is a very special sedan.

THE ESSENTIALS

Complete photos, videos, and inspection report available at www.ClassicPromenade.com.  It’s free to bid and only takes minutes to register.

This is a very well preserved and cared for 1994 Mercedes Benz E500 (w124) which has been owned by our collector client for the past 28 years. It has a clean CARFAX, and is accident and rust free. The owner and his wife have been longtime members of the Classic Car Club of America and the Mercedes-Benz Club, and have enjoyed a beautiful collection of important cars.  With the exception of the 18 inch AMG 5-spoke wheels (the original rims are also included) and the lowered front suspension, this Benz is completely original and a survivor.

This E500 was built in March of 1994 and originally sold through a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Chicago in August of that year. The first owner was a gentleman who owned a number of car dealerships throughout the Midwest. In 1996, its current owner purchased the car with just 2,200 miles after having found it on the showroom floor of a Toyota dealer in Farmington, MI.  The Toyota dealer was one of the dealerships the original owner operated.

The current owner has a home in Tuscon, Arizona. And immediately after the car was purchased, it was sent to Tucson where it has lived ever since. To be more precise, this E500 has spent most of its life parked next to a 300SL in a climate controlled garage! Since then, this E500 has averaged a mere 2,750 per year for the last 28 years.

This E500 has been extremely well maintained, which is supported by the abundance of paperwork and service receipts (see supporting photo). Some of the more noteworthy and recent service work includes a new A/C condenser (and complete system recharge), new air suspension in the rear, a new power steering pump, new front suspension bushings (control arms, sway bars, etc.), as well as a complete front suspension lowering kit which drops the front end about 1.5 inches.

Though the paint is original, the Rosenholz (Rosewood 485) Metallic still shows beautifully with excellent shine, luster, and depth. One would be very hard pressed to find any scratches or swirl marks on this paint, it truly is in very outstanding condition for its age.  That being said, there are some very hard to notice blemishes around the bottom of the wheel wells. The chrome and stainless overall are in very good to excellent condition, with lots of shine and very few imperfections. The AMG wheels give this Benz a more modern but period correct, and certainly more sporty look. The wheels are free of any curb rash. The original wheels also come with the car, and are in great shape as well.

The interior is extremely very well preserved, and possibly one of the nicest W124 interiors you’ll find anywhere. The attractive Mushroom (light beige) leather with real walnut wood and black dash are very tasteful and timeless. The dash, door panels and headliner are overall very good to excellent. The wood itself has only one spot of epoxy cracking around the window controls, but otherwise it shows fantastically. It appears as though the backseats have never been used, based on the condition of the leather. The front seats have very little to no signs of wear.

All interior components work as they should. In fact, the only thing we noted to be problematic was the small digital box under the speedometer which shows outside temperature; this box only illumines about half the time.

The Porsche built 303 cubic inch V8 produces 322 hp and 354 ft. lbs. of torque. It is an aluminum block with double overhead cams and 32 valves. The story about the product of these E500s is an interesting one between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. More details can be found in the grey description box on our website listing page.

Mechanically, this E500 is in outstanding running condition. It drives exactly as you would expect from a hand built high-performance luxury Germany sedan; a smooth and effortless driving experience. The current owner has gone to great lengths to maintain this Benz, and it truly is ready to be enjoyed.

The chassis shows that it is rust free. This E500 has all its original manuals, tools, and comes with 3 sets of keys.

Details about this E500s condition are included in the 158-point inspection report which is published as part of this listing, and it is available for viewing at our Phoenix showroom.

The Hagerty Price Guide reflects a No. 3 value of $39,500 and a No. 2 value of $60,200.  Despite this, we believe this will sell at an incredible value.

What kind of lowering kit was used, and what type of springs?
Does the front scrape on sloped driveways?

Classic Promenade
December 19, 2020

The owner could not recall the make of the lowering kit. The front end is slightly lower than stock (about 1.5 inches). During our test drive, we drove in and out of our driveway at Classic Promenade which usually requires low cars to approach at an angle. This E500 could approach the driveway head on without scraping.

Could we please get paint meter readings on the rest of the car?

Classic Promenade
December 19, 2020

I measured the car on several other areas including the roof, hood, passenger side front and rear door, as well as front and rear quarter panel on the passenger side. All measurements were between 4-6mils.

We have uploaded several new photos showing a paint meter on the rear trunk area. The owner informed us that he bumped his Corvette into the back corner of the E500 when pulling into his garage. An insurance claim was never taken out, as it was a small scratch. The orange peel you can see around the E500 emblem is exaggerated in the first photo. In real life it is not noticeable. Nonetheless it is there and likely overspray. The paint on the rest of the car is in very good, original condition.

I’ve requested paint meter readings as the paint looks very wavy, especially on the trunk and around the E500 emblem.

From 1990 to 1995, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E (W124). The E500 was created in close cooperation with Porsche. With its engineering department being fully occupied with the development of the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche in 1989 to redesign the W124 chassis to shoehorn the 5.0L V8 used in the SL into it, along with the necessary changes on the suspension system and drive train. When the car was ready, it was found that its widened wings didn't fit through the W124 assembly line in Sindelfingen in three places. Hence Porsche was also commissioned to assemble the car. As a side-effect this arrangement provided workload for Porsche's plant, as the company was in crisis at the time, and its factory capacity was underutilized. During production Mercedes-Benz delivered parts to Porsche's "Reutter-Bau" plant in Zuffenhausen (an urban district of Stuttgart) where the E500 chassis were hand-assembled. When finished the chassis were transported by truck to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen to be painted. As soon as the paint was dry the varnished chassis were then shipped back to Porsche's "Rössle-Bau" in Zuffenhausen where the engine was put in and the car completed. For final inspection and delivery the vehicles again were transported to Sindelfingen. This process took a full 18 days per car.
