Harry's Thoughts

This 32-year owned Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is exhilarating to drive and may be the perfect blend of vintage charm and modern performance. This iconic sports car represents a masterpiece of German engineering wrapped in an elegant, open-top package. The rare livery color and low mileage make this 944 S2 Cabriolet a wonderful choice for most German automotive collections.

THE ESSENTIALS

The 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a classic sports car that represents the last iteration of the Porsche 944 series, which was produced from 1982 to 1991. The S2 Cabriolet is highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors alike for its combination of performance, sportiness and 2+2 practicality in a luxury open-top driving experience. Add in the iconic Porsche styling by Anatole Lapine and you have a winning combination. The 944 S2s are experiencing a resurgence in the collector car market and are one of the few vehicles that are increasing in value. This 944 S2 would be a wonderful frequent driver or a perfect touring car.

The 944 Cabriolets were assembled in Heilbronn, Germany of which 1,824 were built for the American market in 1990. This beautiful Cabriolet is a two-owner, low mileage example. The original owner enjoyed this 944 for 32 years. The current owner and collector, Fred Marcus of El Paso, TX, acquired this 944 on March 6, 2023 from Luxsport Motor Group in Plainview, NY. Mr. Marcus is a good friend of ours and an avid collector that maintains his vehicles incredibly well. This 944 has recently been serviced and has had recent upgrades to the interior. It’s ready to be enjoyed by new owners.

The clean lines and signature Porsche curves show well in the striking and rare Cyclamen Red Pearl Metallic paint (Paint Code LZ3T). White, black, silver, and red 944s outnumber the Cyclamen 944s approximately 2,500 to 1. Rare indeed! The livery has a nice luster and shine while showing a few imperfections that are noticeable upon close inspection. The black canvas soft-top is in very nice overall condition and is a nice, snug fit and shows very little wear. The power top mechanism is not functioning, but can be easily opened and closed manually. This S2 comes equipped with silver 16-inch alloy wheels which are wrapped in Continental Control Contact radial tires. The exterior of this 944 is in very nice condition and shows well overall.

The interior upholstery is Linen Leather and the power adjustable bucket seats have recently been reupholstered and are in very nice condition. The rear seat is original and shows very little wear. The dash, steering wheel and door panels are in very nice condition as is the black and linen center console. The linen carpets show minimal wear and are protected with black floormats emblazoned with the Porsche logo. This 944 comes complete with a Blaupunkt audio system including a Blaupunkt equalizer. The air conditioning works well and blows cold. The interior is in very nice overall condition.

The engine compartment is nicely detailed and hosts the 3.0-liter, 16 valve, inline-four cylinder that boasts 208 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, the 944 S2s are capable of a top speed of 150 mph. The engine runs strong with surprising power and the transmission shifts well and performs quietly. This Porsche has recently been serviced and is ready to be enjoyed for years to come.

This 944 comes complete with the Owner’s Manual, Porsche Roadside Assistance booklet, Porsche Service booklet, Warranty & Maintenance book, the Blaupunkt Stereo and Equalizer books and the roll up tool kit. This 944 Cabriolet is a desirable and collectable Porsche and is a joy to drive. It would be a welcome addition to most any collection.

Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

In 1989 the 944 S2 was introduced, powered by a 211 PS (155 kW; 208 hp) naturally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16-valve 3.0 L version of the 944 S' engine. With a bore of 104 mm (4.1 in) and a stroke of 88 mm (3.5 in), it was the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time.[20] The…
In 1989 the 944 S2 was introduced, powered by a 211 PS (155 kW; 208 hp) naturally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16-valve 3.0 L version of the 944 S' engine. With a bore of 104 mm (4.1 in) and a stroke of 88 mm (3.5 in), it was the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time.[20] The 944 S2 also received a revised transmission and gearing to better suit the 3.0 L M44/41 powerplant. The 944 S2 had the same rounded nose and rear valance as found on the Turbo model. Quoted performance figures included a 0–97 km/h acceleration time of 6.0 seconds (0–100 km/h being achieved in 6.8 seconds) and a top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) for the cars with a manual transmission. A Club Sport touring package (M637) was also available. Dual air bags (left hand drive models), limited-slip differential and ABS were optional. Design 90 16-inch cast alloy wheels were standard equipment. The first Porsche 944 Cabriolet prototype was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto show in 1985. This first prototype was styled by Anotele Lapine and built by Bauer. This new Porsche 944 Cabriolet was very well received, but it wasn't until 1987 that the American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) won the contract to build the new model. It took another two years for ASC to complete their new Weinsberg plant in Heilbronn, Germany before they could begin production. It was January 1989, before the new Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet would begin to roll off ASC's assembly line.
