Harry's Thoughts

This classic G-Wagen would make a great driver for any classic off-road enthusiast and will make for a great topic of conversation with any other Mercedes owner.

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1980 short wheel base Mercedes-Benz 280GE is an off-road capable classic Mercedes G-Wagen that has been meticulously maintained and well cared for since it was imported from Germany. With its freshly resprayed Cactus Green over Plaid interior, this G-Wagen would be at home at any local cars & coffee and is sure to be a conversation starter. Considering the well documented service and restoration history, this is sure to be one of the nicest first generation G-Wagens that you will find.

When looking at this 1980 G-Wagen, the first thing you’ll notice is that Mercedes hasn’t changed the G-Class formula much in its history. The square body, large windows and off-road accessories are quite similar to the contemporary design, but with some classic flair. This Wagen was refinished in 2018 in Cactus Green (DB-880) after extensive rust remediation. All of the brightwork has been blacked out for a more sinister look. The rear of this Mercedes is showcased with a “barn door” style door opening and a swing-out tire carrier, holding a full size replacement wheel and tire. The wheels are 18″ G-Class type 463 wheels and are matte black to match the dark theme. The windows are dark tinted all the way around with a few minor scratches noted on the driver side rear window tint. To finish the off-road look, the roof is covered by a full length roof rack that appears new.

The Cactus Green paint was also used as an accent in the interior to offset the black and plaid interior. The seats are showing wear and cracking on the vinyl sides and back, from ingress and egress over the years. Four yards of correct plaid will come with the sale of this G-Wagen for the next owner to have the seats recovered, if desired. Black carpet was replaced recently and they show very well. The instrumentation appears correct and original, however the original radio was replaced with a Kenwood head unit, with added speakers behind the rear seat. Overall, the interior presents very well and has a very clean feel.

Mechanically, this Mercedes exemplifies the phrase “German engineering” and is a pleasure to drive. Considering the extensive investment (over $16,000) made in just the last five years of current ownership, this classic G-Wagen is sure to offer many more miles of enjoyment. The 2.8L M110 engine is a favorite of many Mercedes enthusiasts and it is easy to see why. When mated to the four speed manual transmission, the driver has full control of this Mercedes at up to highway speeds, while still being very capable off-road. The shifter moves through the gears confidently and the on road demeanor is confidence inspiring. The tires have almost full tread and appear like new.

Included with the sale are original manuals, federalization documentation, miscellaneous accessories, two brand new in box Bilstein Shocks, and a binder with service records, restoration photos, an appraisal and other details about the Mercedes from the owner. In certain markets, it has been sold under the Puch name as Puch G. The G-Wagen is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. Despite the introduction of an intended replacement, the unibody SUV Mercedes-Benz GL-Class in 2006, the G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest-produced vehicles in Daimler's history, with a span of 41 years. Only the Unimog surpasses it. A Puch G branded example The success and longevity of the G-Class has reached another milestone: 400,000th unit was built on 4 December 2020. The 300,000th unit was built three years ago in 2017.
