Harry's Thoughts

This is a fully restored MGB with the bonus of a Moss Supercharger and overdrive. The new owner of this MG will invest a tiny portion of the cost of the restoration. This is incredible fun for the money!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautiful 1973 MGB Roadster that has a wonderful provenance and was upgraded with many performance enhancements to make it a terrific driving car.  This MGB has been owned and enjoyed by its present physician owner for the past 39 years and has never been in any accident or suffered from rust.  In 2005, this MGB benefitted from a $30,000 professional restoration from the MG Shop in Tempe, AZ.   But as gorgeous as this car looks, the enhancements made by the MG Shop are exactly what you would want on a roadster designed for touring.  During the restoration, they fully rebuilt the 1,800 cc motor, added a Moss Supercharger kit, installed a Moss suspension kit and MiniLite wheels for improved handling and performance.  It benefits from having an overdrive, which functions as a fifth gear.  This is nice balance of options for both touring and local shows.

The livery appears to be black, but it is in fact a deep, dark Midnight blue metallic that is in beautiful condition today.  There are a couple of small chips and imperfections from the past 15 years, but nothing significant and there are no dents.  It has a deep luster and shine and is complimented by the stainless steel and chrome which is very nice except a few small dings in the drivers door stainless strip.  The black vinyl canvas convertible top and optional tonneau cover make the paint pop that much more and are in as-new condition.  The 15-inch MiniLite wheels and Pirelli P5000 radials look right on the car, even though they are upgraded from the original 14-inch wheels.

The interior has beautiful black leather seats.  The leather is nearly as new and is soft and supple.  During the restoration, all new interior trim was used, so the black carpeting, dashboard and trunk liners are all nearly as-new.   The MGB has an Alpine CD stereo system with upgraded speakers, amplifier and a sub-woofer installed in the trunk.  The facia of the dash looks perfect and has been upgraded with a nice fat black leather Moto-Lita steering wheel.

The engine compartment displays much of the magic of this car.  It is in nearly show condition.  We love the integration of the supercharger, the oil cooler and the electronic ignition, for more dependable operations.  As mentioned previously, the MG Shop rebuilt the 1,800 cc motor and added the Moss Supercharger kit making this a terrific touring MGB.  It also benefitted from the installation of an alternator supplied by Moss and the overdrive makes it great on the highways!

Driving this MGB is fantastic.  It loves to rev, which is more characteristic of an Alfa than any MGB I’ve driven.  It is tight and everything works as it should.  This is a wonderful MGB that will outperform any MGB that we’ve ever had.

Our client acquired the roadster 1982 while he was completing his residency.  In 1982 it had accumulated about 50,000 miles and was in nice overall condition.  It was his primary driver for about three years, then used as a weekend car for a few more years until it was stored for the next 15 years.   The restoration took about two years and it has seen little use since.  It was recently serviced and inspected by the MG Shop and it is now ready for its next caretaker to enjoy.  Today, the MGB has 81,000 miles and is still in beautiful condition.  It has accumulated less than 1,000 miles since its restoration in 2005 and was recently fully serviced by the MG Shop.

The 158-point inspection is available on our website.  This MGB flew through the inspection process and is ready to enjoy.  This MGB comes complete with extra keys, a Driver’s Handbook and service receipts.  We noticed that the spare wheel is a different model and it comes complete with its original jack and storage bag for the jack.  During the restoration front and rear sway bars and new heavier springs were installed for better handling.

Interesting Fact: The MGB succeeded the MGA, both of which were produced by MG, in 1962. Production continued on this model until 1980, which ended with over 523,000 cars being manufactured. Assembly on the MGB occurred in multiple areas, but originally began in Abingdon, England before eventually moving to Australia. The car itself is a powerful beast, with a 0 to 60 acceleration time of around 11 seconds with a power output of 95 horsepower; both respectable numbers for the time period. Crumple zones were first introduced on the MGB, a game-changer for the automobile industry, when a driver was killed in a collision with a taxi. This event led to the development of safety standards for the auto industry as a whole. There is a four-cylinder and eight-cylinder option for the MGB, but both are known for providing a fantastic driving experience. Car collectors and enthusiasts alike still try to get their hands on this model!
