This is a beautifully restored US delivery 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL with some of the most desired color combinations and options. This Mercedes has been well cared for in every respect, being one of the most iconic models ever produced.
The three-year nut and bolt restoration was performed by European Foreign Classics, LTD, and was done with impeccable detail and accuracy. This comprehensive restoration including rebuilding the engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, and rear end. This 280 was restored for the personal use of European Foreign Classics owner and resulting in what could be considered one of the finer Pagodas on the market.
The restoration took place over a 3-4 year process, in which the owner documented the entirety of the process on a single invoice. However, given that this car was done for himself, he did not create individual invoices for the work done. Nonetheless, we are provided with restoration photos that show the extent of what is considered a complete nut and bolt restoration. The 280SL has travelled less than 500 miles since the restoration.
The condition and attention to detail associated with this example makes this an investment-grade collector car. Though the headlight notches and front fender spotwelds – important details on these SL’s – have been painted over and smoothed out. Nonetheless, this is a complete, numbers matching motorcar and one of only 830 produced, as 1971 was the final production year for this second generation (w113) roadster.
The livery is sporty and elegant in its original Signal Red (Paint Code 568) complemented by chrome that is beautiful condition. This 280SL has had a complete bare metal repaint, disassembling the car as needed. Likewise, the undercarriage was also painstakingly repainted during the restoration. The OEM European Headlights complete the look.
The Cognac Leather (Code 120) and Brown Carpet (6454) are all new and look, feel and smell as-new. Complimenting the leather are the beautifully refinished wood trim pieces. This 280SL also features a new but original equipment radio. We love the look of the beautiful chrome, Cognac leather and the red interior trim. The black convertible top looks as-new and the headliner is also in excellent condition. The same condition is true of the hard top as well, it is also fully restored.
The inspection confirms that the car has never had rust and that all instruments and accessories function as they should. This comes complete with a very nice original tool kit, the factory data card and the owners manuals.
This roadster is available for inspection in NYC, New York. For more details and information, please call, email or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or sales@classicpromenade.com
