1971 Alfa-Romeo Montreal

4 Owners From New, Perfect Running Condition

Harry's Thoughts

I have always liked the Montreal. It is so vastly different than any other Alfa offering, thanks to the Bertone's design and V8 platform.

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1971 Alfa Romeo Montreal is fantastic example of the Bertone bodied V-8 Alfa Romeo that is considered one of Alfa’s wilder production designs in the 1970’s. They are comparatively rare in the U.S., as they were never exported and sold new here in the United States.  This example has benefitted from a sympathetic restoration and preservation, and is very well presented.  The car shows very few signs of age or abuse and has a little over 8,261 kilometers on the odometer, which we believe to be 108,261 total kilometers (approximately 67,000 miles). This Montreal has had four owners from new.

This Alfa was stripped down to the metal and painted in the mid 2000’s in Europe. While we do not have records of the repaint, it is still in very nice condition today. The color was changed from its original orange to black, and there is absolutely no indication that the car was ever orange.

This car retains every option available on a Montreal at the time, including power windows.

BODY:  This Montreal was re-painted as noted above. It is in very nice condition. All of the body panels are ripple, dent, and rust free and don’t appear to have ever had any sort of body or accident damage.  The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident. The windshield is original and also in very nice condition.  The chrome and stainless trim are also in excellent condition.

INTERIOR:  The black interior was the subject of intensive preservation and is trimmed in the original and unrestored fabric seating areas with original grey carpeting. The seating areas are in beautiful condition, with no rips, tears, or wear evident. The door panels are also in the excellent condition.

All of the accessories, including the climate control are in perfect working condition.

The windows power up and down and work perfectly. The trunk is in very nice condition, the trunk covering is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or missing pieces, and the spare tire is accounted for and in very nice condition. Most important, the mechanism that opens and closes the glass lid is in perfect working order. The gas operated arms that hold the glass lid up were replaced with exact reproductions sourced from a German company that produces Alfa parts that look identical to the original items but perform better under all circumstances once installed.

UNDERCARRIAGE:  The underside of the car is exactly what a low-mileage car should look like. It was not in any type of harsh climate or abused at any time over its life. It is very solid and very well preserved and shows no evidence of any accident damage.  It is in very nice original condition.

ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:  The powerplant in this Alfa is the original V-8 engine. It has not been restored and is completely original down to the SPICA fuel injection, which functions perfectly. All aspects of the engine are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio is exactly where it should be.

The engine bay has been preserved and has all of the original specifications with all components in operational condition.  Every detail of the engine compartment is “Alfa Correct” and beautifully presented. It would be difficult to find an original engine compartment with a better presentation.

All engine and drivetrain maintenance is up to date, including the following services:

-oil and filter change

-air filter replacement

-installation of new fuel filter

-engine coolant

-installation of new drive belts

-lubrication of entire chassis

-full service of the braking system including new pads and fluid flush

TRANSMISSION:  The five-speed transmission in this car is in perfect working order and functions as it should. It shifts through all of the gears smoothly and is the original transmission to the car.

TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:  The wheels are the original Alfa Montreal lightweight magnesium wheels, which are very special in and of themselves. They were restored last year in the correct color and shade, and are in beautiful condition, as you can see in the photos. A lot of time and effort was placed into the difficult restoration of the wheels.

The tires are in very nice condition.  They are the correct and original size replacement for the Montreal.

The entire braking system has been gone through to ensure every part works as it should.  All rotors, pads, and seals have been replaced and brake fluid flushed.

OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:  This Montreal runs and drives as it should. The 8-cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly, and the transmission shifts as it should.

The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles.  It has had all of the necessary service recently performed including oil-change, tune up, installation of new battery, etc. It needs absolutely nothing to drive, show, and enjoy. All of the mechanical aspects of the car work as they should.

PLEASE NOTE:  This Montreal still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components!  This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car.  All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct.   It is an original and very special car that, as evidenced by the low mileage and condition, has been driven very sparingly and properly cared for.  If you’ve never driven a Montreal of this period, you are in for a treat with this one!

If you are serious about purchasing this vehicle, we encourage you to inspect it in person and test drive it.

The first production car, Tipo 105.64, was shown at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show and was quite different from the original, using a 2593 cc 90° dry-sump lubricated, cross-plane V8 engine with a bore of 80.0 mm and a stroke of only 64.5 mm and using SPICA (Società Pompe Iniezione Cassani & Affini) fuel injection that produced around 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp), coupled to a five-speed ZF manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. This engine was derived from the 2-litre V8 used in the 33 Stradale and in the Tipo 33 sports prototype racer. The chassis and running gear of the production Montreal were taken from the Giulia GTV coupé and comprised double wishbone suspension with coil springs and dampers at the front and a live axle with limited slip differential at the rear. Since the concept car was already unofficially known as The Montreal, Alfa Romeo kept the model name in production
