What a beautiful Pagoda! Long term ownership, A/C, restored and mechanically excellent!

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Dark Olive over a Cognac leather interior that is a beautiful example and long-term ownership! This Pagoda has been with it’s current owner since 1973 from 600 miles to now showing 59,000 miles. The Pagoda is in excellent mechanical condition, has A/C, been repainted once, and the seats have been recently reupholstered. It is powered by the fuel-injected 2.8-liter M130 inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic. The 280SL comes with its matching Dark Olive removable hard top and original soft top, and presents in overall great condition.

The Mercedes was purchased new in April 1970 by Mr. Dow of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a birthday gift for his wife whom drove the 280SL sparingly. In late 1973, Mr. Dow’s close friend’s family acquired the Pagoda. The Mercedes have been with the family as they have lived in Iowa, Minnesota and Arizona and enjoyed the Pagoda for light recreational driving for great weather.

The exterior is in great condition finished in Dark Olive (291 H) and was repainted in its factory color during the current ownership. The removable Pagoda hard top is finished to match and is in great condition. The original manual soft top has shrunk with age but is retained with the Pagoda. The brightwork throughout is in overall great condition. The headlights, taillights, turn signals, side lights, and reverse lights are all functioning. This Pagoda is ready to be enjoyed!

Inside, the Mercedes features Cognac leather bucket seats reupholstered in September 2026. The rest of the interior is original and in great condition. The original Becker radio was replaced with an aftermarket unit in the early 1990s, and the Becker unit is included. The speedometer, tachometer, fuel, coolant temperature, and oil pressure gauges are all functioning. The clock does not function. The Pagoda has A/C, heater, and defrost. The interior presents beautifully and would be a great Mercedes to enjoy for weekend drives.

Power is provided by the 2.8-liter M130 inline-six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection producing approximately 180 horsepower. The engine is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The Mercedes has power steering and power-assisted disc brakes all around. A known issue is that the speedometer cable is worn and has affected the odometer reading causing intermittent inaccuracy. The current owner reports that total mileage would not exceed 80,000 miles. The Mercedes has been recently serviced, inspected, and has a completed compression test that did not flag any issues.

This 280SL comes complete with the removable matching color hard top, original soft top, and original Becker radio.

Interesting Fact: The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W 113 was replaced by the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed, which was ordered only 882 times and thus is a highly sought-after original option today. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US.   The main change was an upgrade to the 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) maximum power and 180 lb⋅ft (244 N⋅m) maximum torque, which finally gave the W 113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last.   The M130 marked the final evolution of Mercedes-Benz' venerable SOHC M180 inline-six, before it was superseded by the entirely new DOHC M110 inline-six introduced with R107 1974 European 280 SL models. For some time, it was also used in the W 109 300 S-Class, where it retired the expensive 3 liter M189 alloy inline-six. The Mercedes 280SL is still a stunning classic with a rich history!
