Harry's Thoughts

This is a very nice example that is sure to help make its new caretaker many happy memories!

THE ESSENTIALS

We believe this to be one of the most important SLs in existence today. As a totally original 1970 Mercedes 280SL, this has all its original paint and interior and is spectacular. And the color combination is simply stunning! You could search for a decade and never find such a gorgeous original survivor. And, its provenance is equally as compelling. One California owner since new before becoming part of one of the top collections of Mercedes in the world.

Having been bought new at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood, it is a rust-free California “Blue-Plate” car, having now accumulated a total of 52,500 miles. We love cars like this. This is a preservation class show-stopper. It is nearly all original. The original books and manuals are there, the original spare wheel, tools, etc. Even the spare tire is the original, unused, Firestone Phoenix tire!

The rare Horizon Blue livery (Code 304) is handsome and has only been lightly touched up as needed over the years. We have examined the car thoroughly with a paint meter and examined all the original details to ensure that this is indeed an original motorcar. It is so nice, it was readily accepted and shown at the Arizona Concours in its Preservation Class. It features the Horizon Blue hardtop as well as a new factory correct dark blue canvas top. The stunning exterior is complemented beautifully by the original Blue MB Textured interior, including the nearly perfect original blue carpeting. Over the carpet and to help preserve the carpet are new Coco Mats.

The original Becker Europa AM/FM stereo is still mounted in the dash. And the dealer installed Frigiking air conditioning works well and blows ice cold.

Overall, this 280SL is cosmetically in gorgeous original condition and is as comfortable on the show field as a driving tour. All new subframe and engine mounts and any maintenance needed was performed on the motorcar by the collections preferred Mercedes engineers.

The only cosmetic imperfections that we noticed were an old small paint repair near the drivers side hood that could have been performed better and a crack in the steering wheel. Both are pointed out in the photos. The engine compartment and rest of the car has an excellent minimal amount of patina that is stunning.

The car is absolutely as rust free as you will ever find. It is in remarkable condition. The trunk is in perfect original condition as well as the mat in the trunk. This example has the power steering, automatic transmission, bumper overriders, tinted glass and the factory hardtop in Horizon Blue.

The original chrome is in excellent condition. This car has obviously been garaged its entire life.

The car will be sold with the complete file, books, tools, and, if desired, the carrier for the hardtop.

This is an increasingly rare opportunity to find a one previous owner 52,000 mile survivor from California. For more details call Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromenade.com. The 280SL is available for viewing in Phoenix, AZ.

Interesting Fact: The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W 113 was replaced by the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed, which was ordered only 882 times and thus is a highly sought-after original option today. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US.   The main change was an upgrade to the 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) maximum power and 180 lb⋅ft (244 N⋅m) maximum torque, which finally gave the W 113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so their power specification was guaranteed at last.   The M130 marked the final evolution of Mercedes-Benz' venerable SOHC M180 inline-six, before it was superseded by the entirely new DOHC M110 inline-six introduced with R107 1974 European 280 SL models. For some time, it was also used in the W 109 300 S-Class, where it retired the expensive 3 liter M189 alloy inline-six. The Mercedes 280SL is still a stunning classic with a rich history!
