1970 Chevy, Chevelle SS 396, 4-Speed, Rotisserie Restoration!!

$48,800

Harry's Thoughts

Chevelles are a blast. And with the 396 with four speed this is about as much fun as you can have going in a straight line!

THE ESSENTIALS

This Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS3 396 Four-Speed is fabulous to drive. It has received a fully documented professional rotisserie restoration to show standards. This is a muscle car that would perform as well on the show field as it would in a fun street race (just kidding, no one would race this?).

This Chevelle SS was sold new to Gaylen T. Janousek on February 6th1970 from Du Teau Chevrolet Co in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The original Protect-O-Plate is included with the motorcar.  It has had four previous owners in Nebraska before arriving in California.

Nearly every detail of the restoration has been documented in a complete photo album containing approximately 100 photos as well as about 100 invoices from Original Parts Group, National Parts Depot and Year One.  The invoices from the Original Parts Group alone total in excess of $12,000!!  The restoration was completed in about 2005 and the Chevelle has travelled over 15,000 miles since; this means it is well sorted and an excellent car to enjoy!

Painted in its original fabulous colors of Fathom Blue (Paint Code 28) with the white SS striping and Cowl Induction, this is the quintessential muscle car.  The interior has been completely replaced as new with the original and correct Black Strato bucket seats (Trim Code 756).  (the $1,500 remote controlled stereo system is aftermarket!!)

The paint is nearly flawless.  The bodywork is excellent with only a few very minor waves.  The chrome, glass, wheels and trim were all replaced and look nearly as new.

The following are some of the factory options this car included, a list that make the car a blast to drive yet very drivable:

  • 331 12 Bolt Posi-traction
  • 396/402 350 HP
  • M20 Close Ratio four-speed Muncie transmission
  • Front Disc Brakes
  • Power Steering
  • Power Brakes

This has the powerful LS3 396 CID V-8 and has benefited from various performance enhancements, including an Edelbrock intake manifold, Hooker headers, 3” exhaust and much more.  The car runs and drives flawlessly!

The frame was sand blasted and powder coated and all necessary sheet metal was replaced as new.  This Chevelle benefited from all new bumpers, tail lights, markers, new wiring harness, all new interior and new F41 Hotchkiss springs and suspension.  The brakes were upgraded with a new booster and new stainless steel brake and fuel lines.  It also has a new close ratio steering box.

This is a fabulous opportunity to own a fully restored and sorted Chevelle for a fraction of what the costs are to restore one to this level. Whether you want a car to show or for weekend touring, this is a great investment value.  The 2011 Collector Car Price Guide shows the restored value for these Chevelles to be $56,000.

Interesting Fact: The Chevy Chevelle was in production from 1963 to 1977. This mid-sized car had three generations over those 14 years, before finally being succeeded by the Chevy Malibu; a car that is still around today.   The first generation of the Chevelle lasted until 1967 and came in virtually every model one could imagine. One of the most powerful engines that is in some Chevelle’s is a 6.5-liter Big-Block V8 engine. However, this wasn’t good enough for Chevy, so they released a Chevelle SS to get their foot in the door of muscle cars.   As the second generation emerged, the Chevelle design seemed to take more after the SS variant rather than the base. Aerodynamic builds and a low-profile design helped buyers to know what they were considering purchasing. One unique feature of the Chevelle is that it was advertised as America’s most popular mid-size car. Even though the Chevelle was replaced by the downsized Malibu, this model paved the way for Chevy race cars and future sport models. Due to this, many seek out the Chevelle in an attempt to purchase one and add it to their garage!
