Harry's Thoughts
THE ESSENTIALS
SALE PENDING to Connecticut!! This is a one family owned 1966 Mercedes 230SL with air conditioning, soft and hard tops, and 71,000 documented miles since new. This car has been loved from day one! We have wonderful files of information starting with letters from Mercedes in Germany coordinating the Euro delivery to its shipment back to the US. It is a very nice blend of original and sympathetically restored. The white exterior and red MB Tex interior makes for a stunning combination.
This 230SL was bought new at the Mercedes dealership in Chicago for Roslyn Boykoff by her husband Dr. Max Boykoff. It was to replace her 1965 Buick Electra 225 when one of the windows decided to stop working. They ordered the 230SL to be picked up in Germany, where they enjoyed it for a week before returning it to the factory for shipment back to Chicago.
Roslyn enjoyed the 230SL as her daily driver for about twelve years and the car had accumulated about 67,970 miles. She worked in her husbands general medical practice at Rogers Park, Illinois. The 230SL was replaced with a new 1978 450SL. The 230SL was then given to her son, Stuart Boykoff, on February 13, 1978, who moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Stuart enjoyed the car for for the next 40 years and about 4,000 more miles until we purchased it!! The car had never been in an accident and it was well maintained.
In April of 1990, Stuart had changed the original color from Arabian Gray to Arctic White with a high quality paint by Auto Galleria in Scottsdale. The livery still retains excellent brilliance and looks factory authentic with the exception of the engine compartment which was painted black rather than body color (white). We have to agree, the white exterior looks fantastic! All the chrome is in excellent condition, with no pitting for scratches. The spot welds are all present in the engine compartment as well as the dashes near the headlight bezels.
The red MB Tex interior is all original and we bought new coco mats for the floors. And it looks great! The wood had been redone as well. It comes with the Becker Europa AM-FM radio and the original seat belts. The black soft top and the white hard top are both in excellent condition. The chrome in the interior is as new and really sets off the wood, white paint and red vinyl. The steering wheel has some minor cracking that you can see in the photos.
The trunk looks factory fresh with the correct mats, tools, jack, books and owners manuals and spare wheel. We have photos of the car in Illinois in the original Arabian Gray and many documents going back through the last 50 plus years. The floorpans are in very nice condition and just in front of the rear wheel wells under the car are two small patches from a prior rust repair. These were repaired by the craftsmen at Auto Galleria in 1990 when the paint was redone. There are no outstanding rust issues and the car has never been in an accident.
The 230SL drive very well and has excellent power. The transmission shifts perfectly and all the instruments work as they should. The stereo and antenna operate well but the clock is not working. We had the car fully serviced and the valves adjusted at MB Services in Phoenix. The car is ready to drive and enjoy!
