Harry's Thoughts

K-Code Mustangs are incredibly agile, perform well and are still a great value. This one checks many boxes: mostly original (including its paint), a rust-free "black plate" California car and great looking in its Rangoon Red.

We are pleased to offer this 1966 Ford Mustang K-Code GT Coupe that is a true rust-free California “Black Plate” car.  This is a true survivor that has been maintained and cared for since new.  We love the Rangoon Red livery and the red line tires.  This fast and agile Mustang has been with a long-time client of Classic Promenade’s and who is a retired Master Ford mechanic.  He’s owned this K-Code for about two years and has made many major service upgrades.

The K-Code represents the highest performing evolution of the Mustangs.  The K-Code is identified by the K in each cars VIN and results in about a 20% increase in horsepower to 271 hp from the venerable 289 CID V8.  This example has the four-speed manual transmission and the 3.50 Axle ratio, with about 100 miles accumulated since most of the drivetrain has been rebuilt.  The Mustang comes complete with thorough documentation.

This Mustang also comes complete with the desirable GT Package, which included dual trumpet exhaust, special handling upgrades, quicker ratio steering, front disc brakes, and loads of cosmetic upgrades to make is sportier.  It also has the Pony Interior package, which just looks right.

The Rangoon Red livery is about 80% original with only touch ups as needed over the past 54 years.  The paint is in remarkable condition as you can see from the photo gallery.  We love the red complimented with the GT Package stripes, blacked out grill and auxiliary lights.  Even the new redline tires look right, especially with the Rally wheels.

The upgraded Pony interior is in excellent condition in its original red vinyl.  The original black carpeting has some fraying from use, but is overall nice for its age.  There are no tears or holes.  We love the rally pack gauges that have the tachometer and clock.  The steering wheel is new and is perfect.  The Mustang comes with its original AM radio in the dash and an upgraded AM/FM CD player.in the glove box.

The Mustang has accumulated 104,000 miles from new.  Its major service included new rear shocks, new rear brakes, new emergency brake assembly, new major tune up and Holly carburetor, a new clutch assembly and spring, new oil pan and rear seal, complete transmission rebuild, and a new gas tank and sending unit.  The only known item not functioning are the backup lights.  The Mustang does not have its owner’s manual or shop manual, but both are readily available online.

This is a rust-free California K-Code Mustang that is largely original and ready for show or touring. For more information and details, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at harry@classicpromenade.com.

This is a rust-free California car from new. And is the definition of what anyone would call a survivor. 80% of the paint is original, original interior except the carpet, and the car looks fantastic. And the original CA black plates are almost a certification of the provenance.

Interesting Fact: The Ford Mustang has been in continuous production since 1964 and is currently in its sixth generation. This vehicle was originally predicted to sell 100,000 units but ended up selling 400,000 in its first year, and the one-millionth was sold within two years of launch. From 1965 to 1973, the Ford Mustang was created from the compact Ford Falcon. In 1974, however, Ford decided to rework the Mustang to be a longer-wheelbase version of the Pinto. This model, called the Mustang II, was standard until the Mustang began using the Fox platform in 1979. The Ford Mustang stopped using the Fox platform in 2005 and has since produced two generations that use their own unique platforms. The sporty vehicle has offered six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines throughout its lifespan, but a four-cylinder model is the base today. Throughout the years, varying models of the Ford Mustang were denoted with different nameplates such as GT, Mach 1, Cobra, and more. This muscle car is still a popular option for car buyers and enthusiasts today!
