Harry's Thoughts

This is a terrific example of the Jetson's styled T-Bird. These are iconic dependable and comfortable cars that are a tremendous value. This is a California car that benefitted from an extensive restoration.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautiful fully restored rust-free 1963 Ford Thunderbird coupe that spent its life in California and has benefited from a fully documented professional restoration.  This was a two prior owner example that has been thoughtfully restored and is in overall excellent condition today. This highly optioned T-Bird has all the desirable power features and air conditioning and is ready for touring or regional concours events.

In 2014, the current owner purchased this Thunderbird from its second owner, who lived in the California Gold Country.  He then commenced a full complete nut and bolt restoration from 2014 through 2019.  The restoration was focused primarily on making it a great driving and reliable tour car but resulted in being a concours worthy example.  During the restoration, several mechanical upgrades had been made to provide greater horsepower, cooler operating temperatures and better gas mileage (providing 17 MPG on the highway).  This is all documented in detail, which will be provided to its new owner.

The livery originally was Acapulco Blue (Paint Code E) and now repainted with three coats of a beautiful vibrant blue that replicates Silver Mink Blue.  The T-Bird’s paint is complimented with its restored painted wheel covers.  Her chrome and stainless-steel trim are in overall excellent condition with only some wear showing on the rear tail lamp trim rings.  All the rubber seals have been replaced and are in excellent condition.  We love the Jetson’s mid-century styling of the 1963 T-Birds and this is our favorite color.  It looks like a contemporary color today.

The interior has been beautifully restored from its original Medium blue crinkle vinyl and light blue Vachette vinyl (Trim Code 52) to a stunning two-tone blue and gray. There is only one small mark on the center arm rest.  Otherwise, the interior is ready for show.  This T-Bird is well optioned, including power windows, power steering, power brakes, power front seats and air conditioning.  During the restoration, Quiet Ride anti-noise suppression was added to minimize road noise and making her truly enjoyable to drive long distances. The original radio has been restored and includes a plug-in connection for your phone or iPod.  The blue carpet is in excellent condition and the black Thunderbird rubber mats are new. The dash and center console look fantastic, and all the gauges and components are working.

The engine compartment is beautifully restored to show condition. The venerable 390 CID V8 engine provides 300 hp and has been professionally rebuilt.  The Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission has also been fully rebuilt and resealed.  All systems have been thoroughly checked, replaced, or rebuilt as needed. The A/C, heating, exhaust, starting, steering, suspension, charging, transmission, cooling, every mechanical system has been thoughtfully addressed and working.

This is an opportunity to acquire a well-restored Thunderbird to take on your next cross-country adventure or add to your collection. This beautiful T-Bird comes with extensive documentation of the restoration, records, owner’s manual, service manual, magazines, memorabilia, car cover, full spare, jack, and lug wrench.

Interesting Fact: The Ford Thunderbird is an upscale vehicle that featured eleven unique generations. This vehicle sparked the expansion of the market segment for personal luxury vehicles that feature a higher emphasis on driving comfort, rather than high-speed performance. Production on the Ford Thunderbird occurred from 1955 to 1997 and then again from 2002 to 2005. By the end of 2005, Ford had managed to produce over 4.4 million Thunderbirds. The car was originally designed as a sporty two-seat convertible but was not marketed as such. Within a few years, a second row was added, and the Ford Thunderbird is known for getting larger and large in size until the late 1970s. Many V8 engines have been used in the Ford Thunderbird over the years. As the size of the model increased, a larger engine was also required to support the vehicle. This resulted in later models having poor fuel efficiency. While they weren’t advertised for speed, Ford used the Thunderbird body in their NASCAR races, with many hitting an average speed of about 200 miles per hour. The final Thunderbird was manufactured in July of 2005, but the vehicle still holds up as one of the most comfortable and high-performing cars to date!
