Harry's Thoughts

I recently learned that a Sprite is a small fairly-like Elf. Now thinking about it, this name is very suiting for this car! This Austin-Healey is probably one of the happiest looking cars I've ever seen.

This is a stunning concours quality 1960 Austin-Healy “Bugeye” Sprite Mk I that has benefitted from a no expense spared restoration.  With a total investment in excess of $100,000, this Frogeye Sprite is spectacular.  All of the racing livery is easily removed and the Sprite has less than 50 miles added since its restoration.

The restoration started with a solid, nice example that was from Eastern Colorado.  The Sprite was largely rust free with only some minor rust on the driver side floor area.

The restoration was completed recently by Doctor Jag Technologies in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The restorers are used to restoring E-Types and other high-end British motorcars.  The same no expense spared methodology was used for this Sprite.

The parts alone cost in excess of $15,000, documented with numerous pages of single-spaced lines of accounting detail.  The stack of receipts is literally two inches thick.  The labor value was beyond reason with about 1,800 hours invested.  This is part of a 70-car collection, including 26 Jaguars.

This Sprite has been beautifully finished in Sky Blue and has the correct original steel wheels with the hubcaps, giving it a spectacular look.  The paint, chrome and all the finish work are all in excellent condition.  This is ready to be competitive at concours events. We are sure that Sprites were never made this nice from the factory.  The new black vinyl convertible top has yet to see sunlight!  Forgive the green spots in the photo gallery.  These are simply the reflection of the green tool box sitting in front of the Sprite!  This Sprite is as close to perfect as you’ll find (the videos do a thorough job of covering it, as well).

The gorgeous dark blue leather interior and carpeting is all new and without fault.  The quality of the materials are the same as for the $300,000 Jaguar restorations.  Everything in the interior is as-new.  The dash, instruments and door panels are also either new or restored.  Everything works as it should.

All the drivetrain and suspension were completely rebuilt.  The engine pulls strong and operates perfectly.  We noted no modifications, the restoration was performed to bring it back to its original glory.

An independent inspection was conducted and the report is available for your review.  It confirms the pristine condition of this roadster, as you would expect with a fresh restoration.  If you are interested in acquiring the Sprite that is essentially as-new or better than new, this may be your motorcar.

For more information and details, please call, text or email Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or harry@classicpromenade.com.  The Sprite may be viewed in New Mexico.

The Austin-Healey Sprite is a small open sports car which was produced in the United Kingdom from 1958 to 1971. The Sprite was announced to the press in Monte Carlo by the British Motor Corporation on 20 May 1958, two days after that year's Monaco Grand Prix. It was intended to be a low-cost model that "a chap could keep in his bike shed", yet be the successor to the sporting versions of the pre-war Austin Seven. The Sprite was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company, with production being undertaken at the MG factory at Abingdon. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and as many other components from existing cars as possible to keep costs down. When the Mk. II Sprite was introduced in 1961 it was joined by a badge-engineered MG version, the Midget, reviving a model name used by MG from the late 1920s through to the mid 1950s. Enthusiasts often refer to these later Sprites and Midgets collectively as "Spridgets." The MG-badged version of the car continued in production for several years after the Austin-Healey brand ceased to exist.
