Harry's Thoughts

This is a spectacular James Young bodied Silver Cloud that needs nothing to be a competitive concours competitor or tour car alike. This is a LWB example that has benefitted from a no expense spared restoration. It's gorgeous!!

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a spectacular 1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud LWB with Division with coachwork by James Young that is as gorgeous to drive as it is to behold.  This Cloud benefitted from a no-expense spared restoration and is in show condition today.  As a late Silver Cloud, this Rolls has all of the late model upgrades such as power steering and has been further enhanced air condition in both the front and rear passenger compartments.  This Cloud was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show when new, and when you look closely, we can see why.

The total production of all coachbuilt LWB Silver Clouds over the five-year period totaled 32.  We estimate that this is likely one of about three in this body style produced, and certainly the finest extant.  The LWB chassis added four inches to the length of the chassis, with most of this room benefitting the rear passenger compartment.

CLC 14 was delivered to the London-based coachbuilder James Young on the 5th of December 1958.  As a special order through the Swiss Agency S.A. du Garage de L’Athnnoe, this was displayed at the 1959 Geneva Motor Show and then sold to Mr. H. Robinson.  This was special ordered with a large number of custom features, including the spectacular burl walnut cabinetry that could only be made by James Young.  Some of the custom items are the cubbies for wine glasses, decanters, vanities, etc.  The division window and the passenger windows are all electric.  By 1977, RROC member James Nicholson from Frederick, Maryland had acquired the Rolls.  By 1987, this Rolls was acquired by Albert Kimmel from Sacramento, CA, who at one point commenced its gorgeous restoration.  In 2016, the Bonhams Auction house presented its sale at its Amelia Island sale with an auction estimate of $225,000 to $275,000.  We are proud to offer this Rolls for sale in the same condition as it was in during the Bonhams sale.

Presented in an elegant and understated Burgundy livery that is complemented by show quality chrome and stainless-steel trim, the exterior shape and lines are simply stunning.  The sexy curvaceous lines are timeless and perfect.  Being all hand-built in aluminum, this represents the pinnacle of coach building.  The paint is nearly perfect with only very slight signs of paint touch up on the driver’s side doors (these are only noticeable in specific lighting conditions when examined very closely).  The exterior, as is the case with the rest of this Rolls, is truly concours ready.

The interior captures the rest of James Youngs capabilities.  The Biege Leather is soft and supple and looks and feels as new.  The Biege Leather is complemented by the most gorgeous burl walnut veneers in any direction you look.  James Youngs trademark curved dash panels are present and incredible to behold.  The Beige Wilton wool carpeting is as new and has Beige Leather binding.  The interior looks new in every respect.  The modern air conditioning has been well integrated into the dashboard facia as well as the rear parcel shelf.  The rear passenger compartment features the cocktail requisite (decanters are not included in the sale) and wine glass cubbies, with four crystal wine glasses included.  These two cubbies are in the rear door panels.  The center armrest includes a vanity compartment with a clothes brush and space for other items to be added.  Each passenger has an adjustable reading light.  The center divider window is electric and is covered with burl walnut veneer.  Two picnic tables with mirrors as well as footrests are integrated into the division.  The division window is electronically controlled up front or by the rear passengers.

The engine compartment is in show condition.  The venerable 4.9 liter straight six-cylinder engine is the final iteration and development of Rolls-Royces six cylinder.  It is whisper quiet and when running is hard to hear any engine noise, it is nearly silent.  It has a new stainless-steel exhaust added as well.  This Rolls has excellent power and easily and effortlessly keeps up with modern traffic.  The chassis had been thoroughly restored and is in very nice condition today.  The trunk is beautifully finished in the Biege Wilton wool carpeting and has its small and large tools, jack, pump and spare.

The Rolls is ready to show, drive and enjoy. For more details and information please call or text Harry Clark at +1.602.245.7200 or email us at sales@classicpromenade.com.
