Harry's Thoughts

We love MD TDs. They have a fantastic sexy sports car styling with the simplicity of a tractor! They are fun and exhilarating to drive. This is a gorgeous MG that would be a welcome addition to any collection.

THE ESSENTIALS

This beautiful 1952 MG TD is a three-owner, matching numbers and very well-maintained example that has spent most of its existence in New Mexico. This MG is well optioned with two-tone paint, chrome wire wheels, radial tires, and a 5-speed overdrive transmission. She is gorgeous and needs nothing to be enjoyed for both tours and shows.

The current owner, Chuck Teetsel, of Pinetop, AZ, acquired this TD in August of 2021. Chuck cared for and maintained the TD well while driving it sparingly. The previous owner, Will Ferguson of Albuquerque, NM is an avid automotive collector with over 75 British motorcars in his collection.  Mr. Ferguson acquired the MG in 2007 and proceeded to upgrade the MG in the first year of ownership with a 5-speed transmission (receipts accompany the MG) and full beautiful repaint in 2009. Mr. Ferguson believes the original mileage of the car to be approximately 32,000 miles prior to the replacement of the odometer. The odometer currently reads 2,494. Mr. Ferguson acquired the TD from the Lang family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is believed the Lang family purchased the MG new and transferred the title to their son in 1971, as a family gift.

The livery is a beautiful two-tone maroon body with black sweeping fenders. The MG was repainted in 2009 and has gorgeous luster and shine. The paint shows very well overall with only minor imperfections in the high use areas, such as the hood and door jambs, and are unnoticeable except upon close inspection. The chrome bumpers, trim and chrome wire wheels all show very well and beautifully complement the red and black paint. The tan canvas soft top fits snuggly and shows little wear as does the tan canvas tonneau cover which zips down the center to allow the passenger portion of the compartment to be enclosed during driving. The tonneau cover can also completely enclose the entire interior compartment for weather protection. The tan side curtains are complete and in nice condition. Each is stored in its own carrying case. The undercarriage is clean and shows well.

The MG’s interior shows very well throughout. The tan vinyl upholstery is in nice condition with minimal wear and complements the beautiful two-tone exterior. The gorgeous walnut burl wood dash is in excellent condition with beautiful gloss as is the Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel. The black wool carpets show well with minimal wear. The gauges function as designed with the exception of the clock. Overall, the interior is in very nice condition and shows well.

The engine compartment is very clean and nicely detailed throughout. The 1,250 cc XPAG inline-four engine is matching numbers and features dual SU carburetors producing 54 hp. The power is transferred to the rear wheels through an upgraded 5-speed transmission which greatly enhances the drivability of the MG. The mileage is said to be approximately 32,000 miles since new, but this cannot be documented.

The MG shows beautifully and runs and drives as well as it looks. Its accompanied with the Operational Manual, Workshop Manual, several MG publications, transmission update receipts, tonneau cover, and side curtains. It would be a welcomed addition to any British car collection.

Nearly 30,000 TDs had been produced, including about 1700 Mk II models, when the series ended in 1953 with all but 1656 exported, 23,488 of them to the US alone. The 1950 TD Midget announced in January 1950 combined the TC's drivetrain, a modified hypoid-geared rear axle, the MG Y-type chassis, a familiar T-type style body and independent suspension on front axle using coil springs from the MG Y-type saloon: a 1950 road-test report described as "most striking" the resulting "transformation ... in the comfort of riding". Also lifted from the company's successful 1¼-litre saloon was the (still highly geared) rack and pinion steering. In addition the TD featured smaller 15-inch (380 mm) disc type road wheels, a left-hand drive option and standard equipment bumpers and over-riders. The car was also 5 inches (130 mm) wider with a track of 50 inches (1,300 mm). It was seen by enthusiasts at the time as a disappointment, mild and "not a sports car". ". . . the new model is largely designed to consolidate and expand the car's sale in North America." The first TDs were actually built in late 1949.
