Harry's Thoughts
THE ESSENTIALS
This is a fabulous Bentley Mk VI that has low mileage and has been cosmetically restored and is now ready for touring or showing. While not a concours champion motorcar it a the perfect balance of tour ready and yet nice enough for concours entry.
This Mark VI (VIN B417DZ) runs and drives beautifully!! We have just completed a comprehensive recommissioning including a full major tune-up, carburetor rebuild, valve adjustment, replaced all the belts and hoses, new clutch and throwout bearings, rebuilt front end and rebuilt the servo.
The Bentley was ordered by a manufacturing plant in Bolton, England for it’s owner in gratitude for his significant investment in order to retool the company for wartime goods. J. S. Edge, Esq. took delivery of his new Bentley on March 24, 1949 at Joseph Cockshoot & Co. Ltd. He kept it until he passed in 1952. It was later sold to Sir John Elliott who was an important figure in London, being Chairman of the railways, Head of the Institute of Transport, Chairman of the Pullman Car Company, Chairman of Thomas Cook & Sons, etc. It was then sold to Mark White in California. It has been in California for at least a few decades.
This Bentley is extremely solid for a standard steel saloon with sunroof. Most saloons have significant rust and deferred maintenance issues creating a nearly unmarketable motorcar. It is rare to find nice examples as we offer here. The many decades in California likely contributed to its present condition.
The body is extremely straight and solid. The paint is older and in excellent condition. The interior is new and very proper (performed by Ocean Beach Upholstery for about $7,000), with gorgeous butter soft leather and Wilton wool carpeting throughout. The wood is in very nice condition. While it comes complete with the owners manual and tool tray, most of the small tools are not present.
All the gauges work properly, while it has a radio and clock neither are presently working. The chassis still has it’s original rear leave spring leather gaters that are in excellent condition. It has a fabulous set of Michelin radials that look terrific on the car and help make it handle superbly. This positively reflects that the motorcar was well taken care of, with low mileage and has seen little inclimate weather.
