1948 Lincoln Continental Coupe

Rally Veteran, Full CCCA Classic

$24,800

Harry's Thoughts

The late 1940 Lincoln Continentals were trend-setters in design and the last of the V-12 era. This 1948 Lincoln Coupe has been maintained and updated as a reliable touring and rally car and runs and drives as well as it looks. This Lincoln would be a great addition to any American car collection.

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1948 Lincoln Continental Coupe was the last year of production and has been restored to be a terrific tour car that can be shown at local shows.   This is a CCCA “Full Classic” which makes it eligible to participate in CARavans and concours events. The trend-setting design by Edsel Ford and Bob Gregorie made the Post War Lincolns very sought after by Hollywood stars and the elite such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Jackie Cooper. This Lincoln has had several long-time owners and was on display for nearly a decade at the Franklin Automotive Museum in Tucson, AZ. It has been well maintained and restored as needed including mechanical upgrades to optimize it for rally events. It needs little to be shown and toured.

This Lincoln was acquired new and enjoyed for years by a Dentist in South Carolina. It made its way to Texas and then was acquired by a gentleman in the 1960s in Tucson, AZ where it was toured and shown for many years. The Tucson owner maintained the Lincoln well and had the motor rebuilt and made numerous updates over the years. The Lincoln was acquired approximately 15 years ago by the Franklin Automotive Museum in Tucson, AZ where it was on display for eight years. The Lincoln was then acquired in March of 2016 by Michael McClure of Queen Valley, AZ.  Mr. McClure has made numerous mechanical upgrades to the Lincoln and has toured and rallied the Lincoln extensively, adding over 20,000 miles.

The livery of this Lincoln is a beautiful Opal Blue Green (Paint Code M-14154). The body appears to be very straight, and the paint has a very nice luster and shine. This is what we would call a tour quality restoration with very nice cosmetics and an emphasis on dependability.  The chrome and bright work show very well overall with minor imperfections. The bustle back trunk is complete with a rear mount spare which gave way to the popular after-market “Continental Kits”. Another beautiful feature is the circular push button door releases which help streamline the sleek exterior look. The wide white wall tires and chrome wheel covers show well and add to the beautiful classic look of this stunning Lincoln.

The interior is finished in green vinyl and gray nylon cord upholstery which is comfortable and shows well overall. The green Wilton nylon Carpet is in nice condition, showing minor wear only in high traffic areas. The dash, gauges and interior chrome are all in nice condition. The AM radio is in nice condition and the hydraulic power windows work well. The gauges all function properly apart from the radio and the clock. A beautifully designed feature is the circular push button door releases which streamline the interior as they do on the exterior.  The interior shows well overall and is very comfortable.

The engine compartment is nicely detailed and painted and shows well overall. The 1946 through 1948 Lincolns were the only post war American car produced with a V-12 engine. The 292 ci Flathead V-12 produces 125 hp and the power is transferred to the rear differential through the 3-speed on the column manual transmission with freewheeling overdrive which shifts smoothly and operates quietly. The V-12 motor was rebuilt approximately 30k miles ago by H&H Flatheads in La Crescenta, CA and runs strong and well. The current owner has rebuilt and upgraded the entire drivetrain from the flywheel back using hardened bearings making this Lincoln tour ready.

The Lincoln comes with numerous parts included in the sale. This 1948 Lincoln is a gorgeous example and is ready to be enjoyed, toured, and shown.

The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire. The 1939–1948 Continental is recognized as a "Full Classic" by the Classic Car Club of America, one of the last-built cars to be so recognized. As of 2015, the 1948 Lincoln Continental and 1948 Lincoln were the last cars produced and sold by a major U.S. automaker with a V12 engine. Base retail price for the coupe was listed at US$2,727 (equivalent to $54,300 in 2022) and the cabriolet was listed at US$2,778 (equivalent to $55,300 in 2022).
