1940 LaSalle Series 52 Special Coupe

Rare Coupe, Full CCCA Classic, Beautiful Restoration!

$35,800

Harry's Thoughts

This stunning 1940 LaSalle is a rare Series 52 Special Coupe and benefits from an older complete frame-off restoration that still shows and drives incredibly well today. Being the last year for LaSalle and being a full CCCA Classic makes this Series 52 Special Coupe very desirable and would be an exceptional addition to any American automotive collection.

THE ESSENTIALS

This 1940 LaSalle Series 52 Special Coupe is a beautiful example of an older frame-off restoration that is still stunning to behold and a joy to drive today.  The body design of the Coupe accentuates the sexy and curvy lines of the famous LaSalle torpedo body style.  With its running board delete and split windshield, this aerodynamic Coupe is also one of the rarest body styles and arguably one of the best-looking Pre-War designs.  This is also the last year of LaSalle production and being a CCCA Full Classic, make this eligible for CARavans and Concours events around the US. With little effort, this LaSalle can be enjoyed for shows and tours.

This Coupe is one of 3,000 produced and benefitted from a complete frame-off restoration that was said to be completed in about 2009.  just prior to Mr. Ferguson acquiring the car.  By April 9, 2010, the LaSalle was acquired by our good friend and client, Will Ferguson of Albuquerque, from Daniel Schmidt & Company. Mr. Ferguson is an avid automobile collector and enthusiast and has an expansive collection of 74 automobiles.

The livery of this LaSalle is a stunning Black (Paint Code 1) and has gorgeous luster and shine overall. There are very few paint imperfections that are only noticeable upon very close inspection. The chrome and bright work are in excellent condition and show very well overall. The wide white wall Coker tires that wrap the red wheels and chrome wheel covers show little wear and are a nice complement to the deep black livery. The “tall grill” and “cat walks” between the grill and headlamps are in very nice condition. The glass is in nice overall condition except for the rear passenger window which is beginning to show some cloudiness along the top edge. The overall exterior of this LaSalle with its black paint and red and white accent colors is in excellent condition and is certainly ready to show.

The interior is a beautiful gray broadcloth that shows well overall apart from very few areas that show slight wear and very small amounts of soiling. The gray carpet is in very nice condition showing little wear. The dash is in beautiful condition with its accent color and wonderfully styled gauges. The banjo steering wheel feels good in your hands and looks very stylish. The gauges all function as designed except for the temperature gauge and the clock. The gray upholstery is a beautiful complement to the black exterior and wide white wall tires with chrome and red accented wheel covers.

The engine compartment has been beautifully detailed and painted and is home to the 322 ci L-Head V-8 motor which produces 130 bhp at 3,400 rpm. The Series 52 benefits from its longer 123-inch wheelbase, which allows for a smoother ride and the V-8 is mated with a column shift 3-speed manual transmission. The motor runs very well and strong and the transmission shifts easily and performs quietly. The undercarriage is rust-free and well painted and detailed, showing well overall. It is apparent this LaSalle has had few miles since its restoration.

This LaSalle comes with a spare tire, jack and a booklet, The Operating Hints for the 1940 LaSalle. The LaSalle also includes a fun rear license plate frame that reads “1940 World’s Fair New York, New York”. This rare coupe is a wonderful example and is ready to show and tour. It would be a welcomed addition to most collections.

The final 1940 LaSalles were introduced in October 1939 with a full array of semi-custom body styles, as it had in its first year, including a convertible sedan. Earl oversaw this redesign. The LaSalle emerged with a smooth-flowing design, its thin radiator flanked by a series of thin chrome slots. In its final year, sales of the LaSalle reached the second-highest level ever at 24,133. In addition to the Series 40-50, there was also the lower, wider Series 40-52 Special using General Motors' new "Torpedo"-style body.
