1940 LaSalle Series 50 Convertible Sedan

One of 125 Made, Driver Quality, Local Shows

$34,800

Harry's Thoughts

This is a little unusual for us. This is a rare LaSalle convertible sedan that is a nice driver. It can be enjoyed as-is or taken to the next level.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a driver quality 1940 LaSalle Series 50 Convertible Sedan that can be driven and enjoyed and presented at local car shows.  Being the 22nd of 125 made for the 1940 Series 50 model year, this is an incredibly rare example.  The survival rate of the LaSalle’s through WWII and later was very low.  This LaSalle is in overall No. 3 condition, running and driving well and looking sharp from ten feet away.

The paint is a nice deep maroon that looks wonderful in the sunlight.  The paint has a nice luster and finish, but there are many areas where the paint has been touched up over the years.  The chrome and stainless on the bumpers, door handles and trim moldings look great.  We love the art deco stylized airplane wing bumper guards.  The running board rubber is in acceptable condition while the trim along the running boards rougher than the rest of the chrome.  The off-white convertible top is older and fits well.  It has some soiling and wear to the drivers side header, but is very serviceable as it is.  The top boot also fits very well.  The twin spot lights look terrific and gives it a classic appearance.  We love how the LaSalles look without the side mounts making them much more streamlined and modern in appearance.

The interior has newer tan leather that looks terrific with the maroon and feels very soft and supple.  The tan carpeting shows more wear and it would benefit from the carpeting being replaced.

The LaSalle 322 CID V8 is said to produce 130 hp and performs well with its three-speed transmission that has the column shifter.  It has benefitted from a new wiring harness and the engine compartment has been recently detailed and looks nice.  The carburetor has just been rebuilt.  The chassis has not ever been painted but looks very solid and honest.  The Series 50 has the 123 inch chassis.

Interesting Fact: The Cadillac LaSalle is a part of a brand of luxury vehicles produced during the years of 1927 to 1940. LaSalle vehicles were not branded as Cadillac vehicles and, as such, were less expensive, lighter and sportier than Cadillac branded models. LaSalle models were all smaller vehicles than traditionally manufactured Cadillacs, and they were marketed as the second-most prestigious models within the General Motors line-up. By the end of production, the LaSalle's was far closer to other Cadillac models in terms of appearance.
