THE ESSENTIALS

This award-winning 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sports Saloon by Thrupp & Maberly is in beautiful concours condition and is tour ready! Chassis 3AZ96 retains its original engine and has been meticulously restored, including a complete cosmetic refresh over the past two years. This design is sporty and sexy, making it one of the most attractive Phantom IIIs extant.  The Rolls presents in a beautiful two-tone gray livery with a matching gray leather interior that is in overall excellent concours condition. This Phantom III was originally owned by Count Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, who was married to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton. Today, the Phantom III is in excellent condition and can be shown at any major concours event!

Chassis 3AZ96 was coachbuilt by Thrupp & Maberly and ordered by Count Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, who was married to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton. The Phantom III was designated to be built for “Fast Touring,” which sets its styling apart from other Phantom IIIs. The Count specified a steering column 2½ inches longer than standard, a sporty rear-mounted spare wheel without side mounts, a large upright mascot, and a sporty louvered bonnet that continues into the scuttle (cowl). The Phantom III was delivered to the Count at his London residence. The following year, the Countess took delivery of her own Thrupp & Maberly Phantom III, chassis 3BU200, a closely related design that is a concours class winner!

The Phantom III passed to Mr. J. Willcox of South Miami, Florida, in 1951 and to Mr. Hugh Fenwick of Miami, Florida, in 1953. Mr. Fenwick retained the Phantom III for over thirty years, until 1985. The Phantom III then returned to England, passing through the hands of noted dealer Coys of Kensington, owned by Charles Howard, in 1990, then to collector Ivor Silverstone in 1995. London dealer Classic Automobiles acquired the Phantom III in 2000 and sold it to Swiss enthusiast Mr. René Thürig, who owned it through 2024. Mr. Thürig notably drove the Phantom III from London through France to his home in eastern Switzerland.

During his ownership, Mr. Thürig worked with leading marque specialists to restore the Phantom III, including Norman Geeson, Stephe Boddice, Mark Tuttle of the Phantom III Technical Society, and Dennison-Jayne Motors. Significant work included converting the rear axle pinion to tapered roller bearings, remolding the engine mounts, and rebuilding the brakes, steering joints, and kingpins. The Phantom III was converted to full-flow oil filtration and electronic ignition, and rewired with period-correct cotton-braided cable. In 2015, Carrosserie Winiger of Frauenfeld restored the ash A-post and windscreen-pillar woodwork.

The present owner acquired the Phantom III in 2024 and imported it to the United States. Work continued to bring the Phantom III to concours condition, including a comprehensive cosmetic restoration: the Rolls was repainted, the chrome replated and stainless trim polished, the interior fully and correctly reupholstered, and the woodwork restored. In 2026, the Phantom III was shown at the RROC Annual Meet in Palm Springs, earning a National First Place!  Subsequent to the concours, the owner continued to improve the Phantom, correcting issues found by the expert team of judges.  It now presents in very high point concours condition and would be accepted at all major concours events worldwide.

The freshly restored livery on this Phantom III is an elegant two-tone gray with sporty louvered accents across the bonnet and scuttle.  The chrome and stainless-steel brightwork are in excellent condition throughout. The Phantom III features an incredibly rare standing Flying Lady mascot. Its sporty design features long sweeping fenders, rear fender skirts, wire wheels, and the desirable rear mounted spare. The brightwork includes Lucas headlights, driving light, parking lamps, and a beautifully polished radiator grille.

Inside, the Phantom III is in overall excellent concours condition. The interior is trimmed in all new soft and supple gray leather with gorgeous burl walnut woodwork that is in as-new condition. The dashboard features Smiths instrumentation that is all in good working order. The gray Wilton wool carpet is in excellent condition throughout and is correctly bound in gray leather. The interior presents in excellent overall condition!

The Phantom III retains its original engine, Y64B, a 7.3 liter V12 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. This Rolls-Royce starts easily, cold or warm. Both the chassis and engine compartment have been detailed to concours exhibition condition.

The Phantom III comes with build records, historical restoration photos, service records, an owner’s manual, and large tools.

Interesting Fact: The Rolls-Royce Phantom III was the last pre-World War II Rolls-Royce to be produced. Manufactured from 1936 to 1939, there were only 727 units of this luxury car released, with many surviving today.   This model was, sadly, the last car that Henry Royce worked on before he died, which added to its fame and popularity as time went on. An aluminum-alloy V12 engine powers the Phantom III and allows it to hit a top speed of 87.5 miles per hour and a 0 to 60 time of 16.8 seconds. This vehicle used multiple coach builders throughout its lifespan but made very few design changes.   The Phantom III has been seen in media such as a James Bond movie, entitled Goldfinger, and the strength of the vehicle was referenced in the film. Overall, the Rolls-Royce Phantom III is a successful vehicle whose production was inhibited by the onset of World War II. Despite this, the model holds up as a classic in today’s society!
