This is a rare opportunity to acquire a one-family for 48 years Southern California 1972 Jaguar XKE OTS Roadster with 4-speed and 40,000 miles from new. This has to be one of the nicest survivors extant, and is what may be an investment grade opportunity. This is the definition of a survivor and would surely win Preservation Class awards. Some of the paint, interior, glass, rubber and chrome are original and in wonderfully preserved condition with only normal patina for 48 years displayed. We love the combination of small bumpers, 4-speed, chrome wire wheels and the provenance of one family in Southern California. We are re-marketing this E-Type for our client who just acquired an important C-Type recreation.
This E-Type was purchased new by David Van Every, MD from the Jaguar dealership located in Montclair, California. Dr. Every used the car for a few years as his daily driver, making his two-mile commute from his home in Claremont, CA. A few short years later, Dr. Every retired and he continued to enjoy the E-Type for a total of 30 years.
The Jaguar was then given to his son, Scott Van Every. Scott has been the caretaker of the Jaguar for the past 18 years, having accumulated 40,000 miles since new.
The Sable Brown livery is beautiful. Over the years much of the paint has been touched up leaving about one-quarter of the paint being original. There are several areas where there is normal lacquer cracking evident which we highlight in our video inspection. The overall presentation is stunning and, in our opinion, this would not be a car to repaint as it is 48 years old and still has a gorgeous luster and shine without any areas of paint rubbed through to primer. The paint is complimented with its all original chrome that is as-new. From the sculpted headlight surrounds, the “small” bumpers, the wire wheels to the door handles, the chrome on this Jaguar is in showroom condition. The convertible top was replaced 18 years ago, but is in absolutely excellent condition.
The interior is equally stunning. The tan leather interior is without blemishes and looks as if it were five years old. It is soft and supple, having lived its life in Southern California garages and regularly conditioned and kept clean. There is some discoloration patina present in the creases of the seats and the center armrest.
The iconic dashboard is all original and without cracks or markings. The instruments are as-new and there is nearly no wear on any of the switches and levers. Beautiful burl walnut veneers have been added to the center dash and console and provide a very elegant finish to the interior. The burlwood compliment the new replacement wood rimmed steering wheel and shift knob.
Mechanically, the 312 HP V-12 is powerful and smooth. Our inspection shows that the smog pump has long been bypassed by removing the drive belt. Everything works as it should. All gauges, lights and accessories work well. Scott also had the ignition converted to electronic ignition to provide better performance and reliability. The E-Type presents strong oil pressure and runs at appropriate engine temperatures.
The Jaguar has recently benefitted from an investment of about $15,000 worth of major service work performed by one of the nations leading Jaguar engineers, Bill Bassett at Bassett’s Inc. This service work was performed over the past two months by its owner. The Jaguar service includes a major service, new clutch, new set of five Michelin radials, brakes, the wood trim details and much more. This Jaguar is ready to drive across the country of wherever your heart takes you.
The Hagerty No. 2 value is $115,500 and the provenance associated with this example makes this an appropriate data comparison.
