1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner

Dual Quads, Cont. Kit, Gorgeous Restoration, Spectacular!

Harry's Thoughts

This is a stunning example of Ford's remarkable Skyliner retractable hardtop. Featured in Flame Red with Dual Quads and the rare Continental Kit, this is wonderful to drive and show.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautifully restored 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner retractable hardtop that is in showroom condition.  During its restoration, the Fairlane was upgraded with correct high performance “E-Code” dual four-barrel carburetors paired to its correct D-Code Thunderbird 312 Special V8.  This is a gorgeous Skyliner that can be shown at most any concours event or used for cruise nights.

This Skyliner was built at the San Jose, CA plant on the 11th of June 1957.  Its early history is not known, but it joined a significant collection where it benefitted from a complete concours restoration.  By the 28th of July 2018, this Fairlane joined the collection of Mr. Clyde Heiner from Salt Lake City, UT.   Classic Promenade is now presenting it on behalf of his estate with four videos and about 100 photos on our website.

The Flame Red livery is concours quality being beautifully polished for show with spectacular shine and luster.  The paint quality is truly exceptional.  The stainless steel and chrome is also as new with one portion of stainless having a slight indentation.  This Skyliner has the optional rear continental kit and extra deluxe stainless-steel trim added.  The result is fantastic as it accentuates the length of the Fairlane.  The upgraded Thunderbird wire wheels and white walled tires complete the look.  The result is really impressive and a true showstopper.  Overall, this Fairlane is in concours ready condition.

The interior is also in as new condition with little sign of use.  The Red and White vinyl upholstery has Red Airweave inserts in the seating (Trim Code BF).  The red dashboard and instruments are also in concours quality condition with the ample chrome beautifully refinished.  The Red carpeting is as new and has matching correct red Ford mats.  The interior is in fabulous show quality condition.  The electric windows work as they should and the power retractable convertible top works perfectly (See video showing its operations).

The engine compartment is overall in concours condition.  The correct Thunderbird 312 Special V8 (Code D) has been upgraded to Dual Holly four-barrel carburetors with the correct E-Code set up.  This provides an impressive 270 hp.  The engine is paired to its correct Fordomatic automatic transmission.  The chassis and undercarriage is beautifully restored and in show condition.  The air filter housing has a small area of discoloration, otherwise this Fairlane is in show condition.

The perfectly operating power retractable convertible top is a sight to see.  Operation of the folding hardtop assembly alone required four lock motors, three drive motors, ten power relays, ten limit switches, eight circuit breakers, one neutral switch, one activating switch, one cycle indicator light switch, and 610 feet of wiring. This was in addition to its reinforced, 118-wheelbase chassis tasked with supporting the more than 400 pounds of added weight (over the conventional soft-top Sunliner convertible).

The Fairlane comes complete with a file history, a car cover and battery tender.  We have this Skyliner priced very well.  The Hagerty No. 1 Value is $82,400 and the No. 2 Value is $54,400.

The new retractable hardtop Ford went into the production phase unnamed; a first for Ford. Formal permission to use “Skyliner” was submitted on March 11, 1957; it was slated for inclusion in the upscale Fairlane 500 line. Accompanying the soft-top convertible Sunliner, Skyliner was officially introduced on April 14, its base price set at $2,942. Unlike other Ford mainline cars, the Skyliner was never offered with a six-cylinder powerplant; its base engine was a 292-cu.in. V-8 backed by a three-speed manual. Visual styling appeared to be identical to the rest of the Fairlane 500 line, although, the retractable was comprised of no less than 522 unique parts. Among them were longer quarter panels, a taller decklid, and a flatter two-piece roof with a near vertical rear window, all in a harmonious effort to efficiently stow the top within the car’s trunk.
