1933 Packard Eight Model 1002 Phaeton

Hibernia Restoration, Award Winner, Perfect for CARavans and Show!

Harry's Thoughts

This is a very impressive 1933 Packard Phaeton. I was surprised by its acceleration and handling. Overall, it is very confidence inspiring. 1933 is one of the most desired years for Packard and this one doesn't disappoint.

THE ESSENTIALS

This is a beautiful older restoration a 1933 Packard Eight Model 1002 Phaeton performed by the Packard experts at Hibernia Auto Restorations (Bob Turnquist).  This Packard also earned its CCCA Senior Badge No. 332 and is in lovely touring condition today.  This would be accepted at almost any concours event as well as being perfect for CARavans and Club tours.

This Packard was sold new on August 5th, 1933, from the Packard Motor Company in NYC, NY.  This was the 11th body of the Model number 611 Phaeton produced for 1933 on the Packard Eight chassis.  In the late 1960’s, Bob Turnquist, the renowned Packard expert from Hibernia Auto Restoration, completed a full award-winning restoration.  By about 1967, the Packard earned its CCCA Senior Award No. 332 being owned by William Herrman from New Jersey.  The Packard is now being offered as part of a collection on behalf of the estate of its SLC based owner.

The livery is in very nice condition today, perfect for touring and presentable enough to be accepted into almost any concours event in the world.  There are touched up scratches in the high use areas and a couple small areas of cracking.  But the paint really looks very nice and the color combination of cream with brown accents and red wheels looks classic.  The paint has very nice shine and luster and the chrome is in overall nice condition.  Being a Turnquist restoration, this Packard is very well accessorized with Pilot Ray lights, a chrome grill guard, spotlight, dual side mounts with Packard mirrors and a trunk and trunk rack.  Being a Phaeton, there are side vent windows up front and a dual windshield for the rear passengers.  The tan Harrtz canvas convertible top is much newer and in excellent condition.  The Packard comes equipped with all of its side curtains and tonneau cover.  The wide white walled tires are in very good condition showing nominal wear.

The interior is in overall very nice condition.  The red leather interior has patina in the front seats, but the rear passenger compartment is in very nice condition.  The leather is soft and supple and has no tears or deep cracks.  The red Wilton wool carpeting should be replaced in the front compartment, but the rear compartment carpeting is in very nice condition and needs nothing. The burled Carinthian Elm faux wood graining is in nice condition.  Overall, the interior is in very nice condition with perhaps only the front carpeting needing attention.

The engine compartment has been well detailed.  The venerable 319 CID straight eight has nine main bearings and exhibits excellent power.  The acceleration is quite stunning, seeming to displace far more than its 120 hp.  The 136-inch wheelbase is of course lighter, and the Phaeton weighs in at 4,270 pounds.  The engine number is 370041, being the 41st Eight engine for the tenth series and consistent with its low body number (11).  The instruments all read accurately save for it not charging presently and the clock is not working.  The brakes will need adjustment as it has seen limited use for several years.  The engine and chassis likely have 6,500 miles since its restoration.
