THE ESSENTIALS
This 1972 Norton 750 Commando Fastback is a numbers matching, gorgeous example of an expertly restored and maintained Norton Commando. The Commandos were popular worldwide due to their beautiful design and performance history. In the United Kingdom, Commandos won Motor Cycle News “Machine of the Year” five successive years from 1968 to 1972. This Beautiful Norton 750 was restored in the 1990s by Canada’s renowned Norton expert, Dave Sundquist, owner of Redline Norton in Burnaby, British Columbia. Dave has also serviced and maintained this 750 for the past two owners. Dave signed the frame under the seat near the tailpiece and added his signature upgrade, an extra oil filter behind the cylinder barrel during the 1990s restoration. This gorgeous Norton has been ridden approximately 1000 miles since being acquired by the current owner in 2017 and was decommissioned in 2019 and put on display in the owner’s collection. This beautiful Norton would be an incredible addition to any enthusiast’s collection and needs nothing to be enjoyed and shown.
This stunning Norton Commando has had several owners. There are service records that accompany the bike beginning in 2001 during the ownership of Rob McBein of Burnaby, British Columbia with mileage on the Norton showing 17,802. The Norton was acquired sometime later by Bill Holtz, also of Burnaby, British Columbia with service records indicating dates in 2013 with mileage showing 22,627. The Norton was acquired in 2017 by our good friend and collector Kim Spencer. Mr. Spencer nicknamed the Norton “Ed” as in Ed Norton from the TV series the Honeymooners. Mr. Spencer has had the Commando serviced at Redline Norton by Dave Sundquist where Dave confirmed that he restored the Norton in the 1990s. Mr. Spencer rode the Norton approximately 1,000 miles before decommissioning it in 2019 and putting it on display in his collection.
The livery of this gorgeous Norton Commando Fastback is Black (Code 9G) with gold pinstriping. The paint and Pinstriping are in very nice condition with very nice luster and shine overall. There are minor imperfections that are only noticeable upon close inspection. The stainless steel front fender is polished nicely and shows well overall. The seat is black leather and is in very nice condition. There are a few extras added with this Fastback. The turn signals were custom fabricated by Redline Norton as the 1972 Nortons did not come with turn signals but the 1973 Commandos did. It also comes with a headlight visor, UK road tax and bar-end mirrors and the correct tool kit and manual from Andover Norton. The chrome rims have been trued and wrapped in Dunlap Roadmaster TT100 tires which have zero miles on them. Overall, this Norton is a gorgeous example and is ready to be shown.
This 750 Commando is powered by a “Combat Engine”, 745 cc, overhead valve parallel-twin engine producing 58 hp at 6,500 rpm. The power is transferred to the rear wheel through the 4-speed Norton gearbox. The cylinder barrels have been polished and cleaned and the timing and tappet covers are nicely polished and show very well. The stock upsweep exhausts and reverse megaphone silencers really add a sporty look to the Commando. The engine and transmission have been well detailed, and the covers are polished to a near chrome-like shine. The swing arm has been trued, a steering damper has been added, the side stand and center stand have been serviced and the motor has been tuned. This Commando Fastback runs and performs very well and is as much a joy to ride as it is to look at.
This 1972 Norton Commando Fastback comes complete with service records dating back to 2001, a period correct tool kit and Riders Manual and a brown leather belt with a brass Norton belt buckle. This gorgeous Norton Fastback is ready to be ridden, enjoyed, and shown.
