Harry's Thoughts
THE ESSENTIALS
This 1965 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur with coachwork by HJ Mulliner, Park Ward (MPW) is arguably the pinnacle of post war luxury touring. This rare Bentley Continental is the very last of the 18 LHD examples were hand built by the craftsmen at HJ Mulliner with bespoke specifications for its owners. This Bentley Continental is no exception as it is very well optioned and was beautifully restored to concours condition by the marque specialists at Vantage Motorworks. Whether to exhibit in concours events, participate in tours or hold as an investment, this is one of the nicest examples extant.
This Bentley Continental was ordered new by Auto Import Sales, Ltd through Rolls-Royce of Canada, Ltd for Mr. Seymour W Kenney of the Kenney Construction Co in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Imagine, Mr. Kenney was just 47 years of age when he placed the order for this Bentley. The factory completed the special Continental specification chassis on July 15, 1965, when it was then dispatched to MPW in North London to be crafted into the Continental Flying Spur. The Bentley was transported to Halifax, Canada onboard the Pandora embarking on May 26, 1966.
The significant options specified by Mr. Kenney included refrigeration (air conditioning), an extra heater and Irvin seat belts including shoulder straps. We have approximately 50 pages of historical documents related to this Bentley. Mr. Kenney enjoyed the Flying Spur until October of 1972 when it was acquired by Robert Stoddard of Worcester, Mass. In November of 1985, the Flying Spur was then acquired by noted Rolls-Royce and Bentley collector and restorer Robert ‘Bob’ Jefferson of Brookfield, Mass. Then by 1993, the Bentley was acquired by Richard Gorman of Vantage Motorworks in North Miami where it became part of his personal collection, and they performed significant restoration before selling it to a world-renowned collection. Since October of 2021, the Bentley has entered into the personal collection of Elliot Cuker of NYC. Over the past two years, Mr. Cuker has invested approximately $15,000 worth of service work to ensure that this Bentley is in need of nothing.
The livery is striking in classic and elegant Tudor Gray and is complemented by gorgeous chrome and stainless steel. The paint has spectacular shine and luster and is nearly perfect with only a few minute imperfections in the high use areas. The stainless steel was beautifully polished and is in show condition today. The front parking lights are the correct North American specified clear lenses, which look terrific and are impossible to replace. The highly desirable twin headlights have the later series Bentley B logoed and beveled surround, which give an additional flair to the Bentley.
The interior is also in concours condition with gorgeous Beige leather hides (Trim Code VM 3234) and matching beige Wilton wool carpeting. Contrasting against the Beige upholstery is the spectacular burl walnut wood that is as new. We love the Continental specified tachometer and the original AM radio. The rare original factory Jetstar rear air conditioning is graciously mounted along the C-pillar and works very well today. Overall, the interior is striking and in concours condition.
The engine compartment was beautifully detailed by Vantage Motorworks, and all mechanical systems were addressed as needed during its restoration. As one would anticipate, the oil pressure is excellent as is the operating temperatures are perfect. The owner assures us that this Bentley can be driven with confidence. The radials are from last year and look terrific with the correct width wide white wall. The chassis was beautifully restored by Vantage Motorworks and looks excellent today (save for some light cleaning).
Of course, this Bentley comes complete with all of its Owner’s Handbook, small and large tools, jack, flashlight, spare and many maintenance and service receipts, historical documents and more.
This Bentley Continental is priced well for the market. The Hagerty Value Guide has the No. 1 Value at $406,000 with no adjustments for LHD and air conditioning. See the Hagerty Details here: 1965 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur | Hagerty Valuation Tools
