THE ESSENTIALS
This is a beautiful award winning 1962 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II saloon that has benefitted from a restoration from the Rusnak Rolls-Royce dealership in Pasadena, California. It is in absolutely gorgeous condition today and would be perfect for touring or for exhibiting at regional concours events. This air conditioned and rust free RHD example has lived in very dry environments of Saudi Arabia, South Africa, California and Arizona. For the past 46 years the present family has cherished this Rolls! And we love this stunning color combination!
Early in its life it was owned by the famous South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard, who performed the first heart transplant. The Rolls was then acquired by Fredrick Nel from Johannesburg, South Africa on August 24, 1977. By June 5, 1982, Mr. Nel exported the Rolls to his home in Malibu, California where it would remain until being given to his son, Greg Nel of Scottsdale, AZ on November 14, 2007. Greg Nel was the founder and owner of the leading Rolls-Royce and Bentley independent service facility in Arizona, British Automotive. Under Greg Nel’s ownership, the Rolls-Royce has been shown at concours events, earning various class awards. The Nel’s have been caretaker for this Rolls for the past 46 years.
The livery has been refinished in a Silver over Dark Blue two tone complemented by tan coach stripes. The spectacular condition of the paint belies its 25 years since being refinished. The shine and luster are outstanding, and the paint has been beautifully polished. There are no noticeable scratches or dents and only a few chips in the high use door jams and such. This was a bare metal respray by Distinctive Coachwork (later called Autocraft) in Burbank, CA. The stainless steel and chrome are also excellent having been restored at the same time. The wide white walled bias ply tires look exactly per original. The areal is the European style mounted on top of the roof above the windshield. The bumpers and bumper overriders are as new and look stunning. Interesting, the front parking light lenses are clear rather than white, which, we are told, was a requirement for Saudi Arabia.
The interior was also fully restored in 1997 by the Rusnak Rolls-Royce dealership and is finished in Beige Leather with Beige Wilton wool carpeting. The leather is very soft and supple and in excellent overall condition. Included in the sale are as new custom-made beige mouton sheepskin seat covers for the two front seats from South America. We love the matching Beige sueded leather door panels that accent the interior. They are a stunning detail that we have not seen before. There is slight compression of the seat cushion filler, otherwise the interior looks freshly restored. The Beige carpeting shows little wear and only slight soiling, which we will tend to in our detailing. The wood had been completely refinished by Madera Concepts in Santa Barbara, California. They were the Rolls-Royce authorized purveyor for wood refinishing. The wood is beautiful throughout with only a few small areas of imperfection and it appears as though the rear picnic trays were not restored and are nice originals. The original radio and speaker are included in the sale as a more modern stereo system was installed. All of the instruments function as designed, however the clock is not functioning. The under-dash air conditioning is a period correct unit and works well, as is necessary here in Arizona!
The heart of the Silver Cloud II is its venerable 6.2-liter V8 and robust drivetrain, a first for Rolls-Royce. The engine runs very well with excellent power. The engine compartment is in beautiful condition after being restored to show condition during its restoration in 1998. Major mechanical restoration was performed by Rusnak Roll-Royce and subsequent service work was performed by British Automotive in Scottsdale. The engine and engine compartment detailing is largely correct and it is in very nice condition today. The chassis was fully cleaned and painted by Distinctive Coachworks during its restoration and looks terrific today.
This Silver Cloud drives very well and has been well cared for through the years. The automatic transmission works well and shifts smoothly. This Silver Cloud benefits from its factory power steering, which makes driving effortless. We love the comfort and feel while driving.
Included in the sale are some spare parts, keys, spare, lug wrench, jack, tire pump, flashlight, and many of the small and large tools. Also included is a custom fitted car cover and the original handbook and a supplemental service book. The history file is complete with decades of extensive restoration and service records, factory build sheets, photographs and much more. All the acquired photos and documented history makes her extra special.
