Harry's Thoughts

This is a rare find. One owner for the last 60 years, this 1959 Cadillac convertible has only 30,000 miles from new and benefitted from a body off restoration. These Cadillacs are arguably the most iconic representations of 1950’s Americana ever and are highly desired by collectors worldwide.

THE ESSENTIALS

This fully restored 30,000-mile 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible has been owned for the past 60-years by its present owner and benefits from a full body off restoration.  Purchased in 1964 and stored until its restoration was completed in 2000, this Cadillac is simply gorgeous.  Completing about 600 miles since its restoration, this Cadillac can be enjoyed as it is today or easily upgraded to concours standards.

HISTORY OF THIS CADILLAC.  Fate would have it in 1964 when Dennis Olson saw this Cadillac at a little gas station in rural Thompkins, Saskatchewan.  The Cadillacs transmission had failed and the owner, being desperate to get to Ontario, sold it to young Dennis for about $500 (paying for his bus fare and then some).  Being quite young and with limited resources, Dennis stored the Cadillac for the next 35 years.  The Cadillac had accumulated just about 30,000 miles from new.

In 1999, Dennis and his wife Rose commenced a complete, body off the frame restoration with Pride and Joy Restorations in Lethridge, Canada.  The restoration was comprehensive, being completed in 2000.  Pride and Joy Restorations brought the Cadillac down to bare metal and removed any areas of rust.  The Cadillac today is in gorgeous overall condition, but has been driven less than 500 miles since its restoration and could benefit from a minor servicing and normal detailing.  Dennis and Rose enjoyed the Cadillac at local events or trailered it to regional car shows.

EXTERIOR.  The livery is stunning in its Black paint with gorgeous chrome and stainless steel.  Most all of the chrome and stainless are in excellent condition with only a few smaller pieces showing a few minor defects.  The contrast between the Black paint and the chrome are spectacular, setting off the depth and luster of the paint.  There are very few touched up chips in the higher use areas.  We love the additional chrome accent that Dennis added highlighting the double bullet taillights on the rear fender, normally only found on the Eldorados.  The Black vinyl power convertible top is nearly as new and works well.  The wide white walled radials complement the car perfectly.  The fit of the body panels is very nice overall and the exterior is perfect for most all concours events.

INTERIOR.  The impressive interior is presented in burgundy and black.  The upholstery is burgundy vinyl with period correct burgundy and black woven inserts.  The convertible top boot is burgundy vinyl and in very nice condition.  The black loop carpeting appears new and complements the burgundy perfectly.  The dash is black with loads of chrome and stainless-steel panels and clusters.  The dash is in very nice condition with most of the chrome and stainless in very nice to excellent condition.  A few minor pieces show some wear or pitting.  The black and white two-tone steering wheel has a few very minor hairline cracks which can be easily repaired.  Overall, the interior is very nice and is presently perfect for touring or regional shows, or it can be easily upgraded to concours.

INSPECTION SUMMARY.  Because this Cadillac is not in our showroom, we completed a 158-point inspection and found that the clock was not functioning and the Autronic Eye was not connected.  All of the lights, instruments, power windows, power top, heater fan motor, power antenna and Wonderbar AM radio work well.  The windshield is nearly perfect with one small area of minor delamination near the drivers side corner. The passenger side front window glass has a very small crack.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT.  The engine compartment is in very nice overall condition.  The correct finishes were used for the restoration and its venerable 390 CID V-8 engine produces 325 hp and performs well with good power.  The engine number is not stamped on the block, so it is assumed to be a replacement rebuilt engine from the restoration.  This Cadillac features power steering, power brakes and an alternator replaces the generator.  Its four speed Hydramatic automatic transmission shifts well and the suspension and power brakes are responsive.  The engine compartment can benefit from light detailing for showing, but overall presents well and is correct.  The mufflers have been replaced with a deeper, throatier example and there is a minor exhaust leak.  The engine and transmission are well sealed and have little to no fluid leaks.

Overall, this is a wonderful opportunity to own one of the most iconic automobiles ever made.  With its present owner of 60 years offering it for sale for the first time and wearing a lovely, older restoration, we expect this Cadillac to sell quickly.  This can be enjoyed as it is now, or with a relatively small investment this can be upgraded to a concours ready example.  Either way, the new owner will be the beneficiary of six decades of love and dedication.

This Cadillac comes complete with a car cover, its spare wheel, jack, some spare parts, shop manual, receipts, and records as well as a wonderful photo of young Dennis with the Cadillac from about 1964 (with the Cadillac in its original Dunstan Blue Paint Code 26).

The Hagerty Value for a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible is $182,000 for a No. 2 example and $119,000 for a No. 3 example.  We have this priced fairly for the Olson’s and the buyer as a 2- for its condition, low mileage and provenance.

Interesting Fact: The Cadillac Series 62 is a full-size luxury car that was produced by General Motors for 14 years from 1940 to 1964. This vehicle had seven generations over the course of its life and was occasionally marketed as the Sixty-Two or Series Sixty-Two. In its earliest years, the Cadillac Series 62 body resembles a sleek “torpedo” style C-body that features slant in the windshield along with a curved rear window. The original engine in the Series 62 is a 5.7-liter Monobloc V8 that outputs 135 horsepower. This model sold extremely well and accounted for 37 percent of Cadillacs sales in 1940. Eventually, the Cadillac Series 62 went in a boxier direction for the body until the model was renamed to the Cadillac Calais for the 1965 model year. Although the Cadillac Series 62 was discontinued, it is still viewed as a class and is sought after vehicle for many car enthusiasts!
