THE ESSENTIALS
This 1931 Buick Series 60 Phaeton is a very nice older restoration that is a rust-free California car. This example is in overall touring or driver quality with excellent mechanics and an older restoration that is showing its age. As one of only 463 Phaetons ever built, these are incredibly rare. This Buick would be a great example to participate in AACA and other car club events.
The Buick was restored and enjoyed by the Hoopers’ from Torrence, CA. The Hoopers’ were vintage car enthusiasts and long-time members of the Buick Club of America and participated in many tours. The Buick appears to be an older restoration from the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. The current Southern California owner acquired the Buick from Mrs. Hooper in January of 1994. The current owner bought the Phaeton as a gift for his dad, who had always admired the model. The Buick was shipped to his father in Las Vegas where it was enjoyed for over ten years before she was properly decommissioned after he fell ill. The Buick was then recommissioned by a professional mechanic and brought back to California in 2021 so the son could enjoy her.
The livery features four different colors. The Buick’s body is painted in a rich Red with Burgundy belt moldings and black fenders. The body is complimented with tan coach stripes which relate well with the tan wire wheels. The paint is very serviceable and has nice shine and luster with some small imperfections such as touched up chips which are only visible upon close inspection. The chrome and stainless steel are in overall good condition, with many pieces being original which would benefit from rechroming. The running boards are in good condition. The trunk has been repainted a slightly different color than the body from a previous owner. The canvas top is in good condition with no stains or tears. The wood and frame for the top are in good condition with no noticeable defects but is unable to fold down.
The interior is dressed in light beige leather that is soft and supple and is in nice condition. The front black rubber matting and the black carpet in the rear are in very good condition. We love the sleek dash and wood grain accent around the gauges. All of the instruments work except the fuel gauge. The wood trim on the back of the front bench seat shows some cracking but the rest of the wood framing and accents are all in good condition showing the appropriate patina. The chrome hand and foot rails in the passenger compartment are in great condition.
This Buick runs and drives great with its overhead valve 272 CID straight eight engine providing robust torque and a smooth ride. The engine compartment is well detailed throughout. This Buick has been properly serviced and maintained. Recent servicing includes: brake inspection and adjustment, rebuilt Marvel carburetor, rods and mains inspected, reseated and turned the valves, recoated the fuel tank, and it has been upgraded with modern shocks. She starts right up and runs cool. She rides smooth with her upgraded shocks. The 3-speed manual transmission works well and shifts smoothly.
This Buick comes with the two side-mounted spares, trunk, and service pamphlet. This Series 60 is a stylish and rare example that is very fun to drive. Being properly maintained and preserved to keep her running smoothly over the years, this Series 60 would be a great and seldom seen Phaeton to cruise local events.
