THE ESSENTIALS
This fully restored and sorted 1940 Cadillac Series 62 Club Coupe is a proven concours winner that is ideal for touring or for show. This Coupe has earned 99.75-points at the 2014 CCCA Minnesota Grand Classic as well as a National First from the AACA. The curvaceous lines and abundance of chrome make this one of the most stunning designs of the pre-War classics. We particularly appreciate the design being enhanced with its deletion of the running boards and side-mounts.
This Coupe was delivered to Gibson Motor Co in Spokane, Washington on November 20,1939. Being a Northwestern example, it was spared the rust and corrosion that is common with pre-War classics. This Cadillac was later owned and restored by noted Cadillac collector, Larry Klement of Bloomington, MN. From 2008 until 2015, Mr. Klement invested in a concours quality restoration that has proven itself worthy of its well-deserved awards. By January 2020, Steve Matthews of Allen, TX, acquired it as part of his collection. Included with the sale is a substantial file of restoration receipts, factory build records and award history.
This Cadillac received a bare-metal respray in Oxblood Maroon Iridescent (Paint Code 11) which was expertly applied and has deep shine and brilliant depth. The chrome and brightwork are brilliant, having undergone a professional refinishing in preparation for the national shows. The steel wheels are color-matched to the body with bright, wide white wall tires and the chrome hubcaps with Cadillac crests appear like new. The rubber stone guards adorning the rear fenders are also in excellent condition. The panel fit is exceptional and the quality of the craftsmanship is excellent in every respect. There are a couple minor spots where the paint appears thin, most notably on the top of the passenger front fender.
Prominently displayed on the front are two National First Prize badges, one from the AACA for its 2012 National First Prize in the Senior Division and the senior award from the CCCA 2014 Summer Grand Classic in the Primary Division. The undercarriage is detailed and shows well. The exterior overall would be considered near showroom new.
The interior of this Coupe is exceptional and appears showroom new. The interior upholstery is beautifully finished and feels brand new in the proper Tan Herringbone Cloth (Trim Code 52). The tan painted dash matches well and is outfitted with sweep style gauges, an AM radio, clock, and locking glovebox. All instrumentation is in working order, including the clock. The restored three-spoke steering wheel appears as new with a turn indicator stalk on the left and the shifter mounted on the right of the column. Overall impressions of the interior are of the highest quality.
The venerable 346 CID V8 starts with the push of the dash mounted button and is whisper quiet. The entire drivetrain was rebuilt and the engine was professionally balanced during the restoration process. The engine provides ample power to the three-speed manual transmission which shifts between the gears smoothly and with confidence. Steering and suspension feels natural, and the cabin noise is minimal thanks to a Lizard Skin Sound Deadening treatment.
