Harry's Thoughts

The Lincoln Cosmopolitans are the most rare post-war Fords produced. With only three known to exist worldwide, this is a beautiful and well done car that is as practical as it is gorgeous!

THE ESSENTIALS

The photos, video and inspection reports for this Capri are all available on www.classicpromenade.com.

This is a striking example of a fully restored and resto-modded 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri Coupe.  The restoration quality is excellent and was performed under the direction of the owner and our client, who is a long-time Lincoln collector and judge for the LCOC.  The result is a modern driving 1951 Cosmopolitan that has all the creature comforts we’ve come to expect from our daily driving cars, such as air conditioning, power steering and brakes as well as an automatic transmission and fuel injection.  The restoration was completed with a total investment in excess of $200,000.

The 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitans are the top-of-the-line models and were incredibly rare when new.  The coupes and convertibles were the most rare of the Cosmopolitan line, and most people have never seen one in person.  This is one of three Capri coupes known extant, with one in Europe and one other in the US.

The owner started with a two-owner rust-free west coast car that had very low miles.  He then commenced a nine-year restoration to create a completely stock looking Capri with modern practicality and performance.  The exterior is stunning and the only visual clue to its modifications are the dual exhausts.  Likewise, the interior looks very correct and original.

The Capri has Bonita Blue livery with gorgeous chrome and polished stainless throughout.  The body and paint quality are excellent with only a few small imperfections noted.  The body panels have some slight waves that are noticeable in the photo gallery and there is one small door ding on the passenger side near the rear fender skirt.  The blue vinyl top fit the sleek and sexy lines of the Cosmopolitan coupe.  With the signature Frenched in front headlights the Cosmopolitans appeared to be a stylized concept car when they were new and they still look great.  The correct gold and chrome trim has been performed during the restoration, which really sets off the trim.  The original wheel covers and wide white walled radials complete the stock appearance for the Capri.

The interior is equally well restored, with the chrome and stainless painstakingly polished and refinished and complimenting the stiped wool broadcloth accented with blue leather.  The interior is comfortable and  very accurately restored to original with the exception of the modern air conditioning system that has been installed and the automatic transmission selector.  The dashboard is in gorgeous condition and the Capri features power windows.

The drivetrain is where the modifications exist.  The original 337 CID V-8 for the Cosmopolitans were sourced from the Ford commercial truck line.  They were full of torque, but not perfect for this big and stately Lincoln.  The owner, being a knowledgeable Lincoln expert, set out to make this Capri an excellent driving car that could be used daily, or for a fantastic tour car.  The 158-point inspection report has the details of our inspection of the car.

The Capri features a new 351 CID Ford V-8 with all modern fuel injection, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes and air conditioning.  During restoration, Ford parts were used for most all of the major components.  The result is a terrific driving Capri that looks completely stock and original.

Interesting Fact: The Lincoln Cosmopolitan was produced for six years from 1948 to 1954. This full-size luxury car was assembled in Dearborn, Michigan with the rest of the Lincoln models. The Cosmopolitan was a part of the first postwar bodies that Lincoln released and was a result of last-minute revisions between Ford and Lincoln. It was decided by the companies that the Ford released in 1949 would actually be a smaller model, which resulted in the Cosmopolitan being branded under Lincoln. A 5.5-liter Flathead V8 was thrown under the hood which resulted in this model being a powerful, but heavy vehicle. The technology used in the Lincoln Cosmopolitan was advanced for its day and age but became popular mainly as a “lead sled”, which is a vehicle that is heavily modified in particular ways. In the end, the Lincoln Cosmopolitan gave way to models far smaller and less bulky, but this vehicle is a classic in every sense of the word!
