This is a terrific 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible that is mostly original in very nice condition. With the 428-4V CJ V8, C-6 Automatic Transmission, and 3.50 Traction-Lok rear end, this is a great performing Shelby.
This Shelby has been in the possession of its current owner for over 20 years. It was built at the Ford Metuchen plant on June 27, 1968, and is the 3,780th GT500 built. It was shipped to and sold through King Motor Co. in Anniston, Alabama. We do not have information on the first owner, however we do know that a Mr. John Caracciolo of Virginia Beach, VA owned the car until September 2000.
On October 12, 2000, its current owner purchased this Shelby at Automania in New Braunfels, Texas. At that time it had only 54,584 original miles on the odometer. Since then, this car has resided in both San Antonio, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona. Its present owner has driven the KR for an additional 3,400 miles in the past 20 years, for a total of 57,960 miles since new.
We love the Raven Black paint (1724-A) with the white side GT500 KR decals stripes. The black livery with white striping is complimented by its white power convertible top. It appears that much of the paint has been refinished, sometime before the current owner acquired it. The paint looks great from a few feet back with terrific luster and shine, but upon closer inspection there is some remaining orange peel and small areas of cracking, particularly on the front cowl and hood. The paint is very serviceable and is very appropriate for regional shows or touring. Overall, the paint and chrome is good to very good. The chrome overall is very original and decent with a few areas of imperfections.
The black vinyl interior is in good condition and is appears to be all original. You will notice a rip in the driver’s seat and center armrest. We have ordered a replacement arm rest with the correct OEM fabrics. The car presents very well as a survivor and the new owner can decide whether to retain the original components or install the replacement panels. The condition of the interior reflects a car that has been well loved and cared for, albeit one which has aged these past 52 years. The white convertible top looks stunning, and is in very good to excellent condition inside and out.
The engine compartment is very well detailed. The details in the engine compartment look very correct and original. This Shelby is well equipped with power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt steering column, and the GT Equipment group.
This Shelby comes complete with several folders filled with paperwork, receipts, and old photographs. We’ve uploaded a recent service record in the attachments. There are several small accessories that will need attention, including the wipers, radio, clock and horn that are not functioning. Details are included in the 158-point inspection report for your review.
