THE ESSENTIALS

This 1959 Lincoln Continental Convertible Mark IV is offered as a consignment with great pride.  This is a 40,000 mile California car that was recently professionally restored by one of Southern California’s premier collectors who restores his cars to exact detail for his personal collection of over 100 fine collectible automobiles.  This fine motorcar would do well in concours events or regional tours.

With only 2,195 Mark IV convertibles made these have become very rare in recent years, especially one restored to this degree of dedication.  This car is as well equipped as you can get.  It has a new convertible power operated top, power brakes, power steering, six way power seat, power windows, power vent windows, power rear window, power antenna, factory air-conditioning, beautiful new red and white leather interior, new carpeting, side skirts, town and country radio and the magnificent 430 cubic inch V8 engine delivering 350 horse power.

With a 131” wheelbase, this is the largest production car produced in America in 1959 and drives accordingly, very smooth.  As you might imagine, this model was a favorite of the celebrities back in the 50’s , in fact singer Neil Young still has his today.

A unique feature in 1959 on this car is the hard top look of the convertible top and the amazing way it goes up and down.  A single control quickly converts this magnificent convertible from a closed to an open car.  A motor driven rear deck opens wide.  The rigid metal-framed rear window of solid glass (retractable with top) slides down and out of sight.  The soft top folds away and the deck panel silently closes, leaving the smooth unbroken lines of a large sports car with none of the usual cloth piled behind the rear seat.  To return the top to its closed position requires but another touch.  It even locks itself in place on the windshield mounts, automatically….a feature exclusively for the continental convertibles in 1959.

The values of these Continental convertible coupes have held strong in recent years. RM auction sold a comparable 1960 convertible from the Cappy Collection in 2006 for $145,750. We offer here a tremendous value for a car that represents Americana. This will undoubtedly prove to be an appreciating investment for its next owner.

Interesting Fact: The Lincoln Continental is a full-size luxury vehicle that derives its name from the European “continental” styling elements that were added during production. Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, requested a personal vehicle to take on vacation in an attempt to attract Lincoln buyers. This directly led to the Lincoln Continental model line being produced.   All in all, 10 generations have been produced across 9 decades. Production has occurred from 1939 to 1948, 1956 to 2002, and 2016 to 2020. The first generation of the Continental was made to fit the new automotive segment for personal luxury cars. This model was also the final American vehicle line to use a factory produced V12 engine.    Current models of the Lincoln Continental now have the longest wheelbase since their 1979 models. They are also powered by a V6 engine, rather than a V12, but they still produce around 400 horsepower. The Lincoln Continental is still viewed as a luxurious vehicle that offers a smooth and reliable ride!
